Top 5 Seo Realities For Business-To-Business (B-To-B) Marketers

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

QUICK Q & AQ. Is search engine optimization (SEO) underutilized in the b-to-b space?A. Yes.Q. Is b-to-b SEO misunderstood?A. Yes.Q. Is SEO reality, or it is more spar-and-mirrors.A. It’s a reality. And SEO is critical for b-to-b sales and marketingsuccess. Notice, “b-to-b sales and marketing.” SEO may just be the single most vital tactic in driving sales leads into your organization. Then there’s SEM (search engine marketing). SEO and SEM work in tandem. In this article you’ll learn about the basics of SEO and learn the top five realities that surround SEO for business to business marketers. You’ll also learn how SEM (search engine marketing) complements SEO.First, what is SEO, or search engine optimization?Let’s see: maybe we should consult Wikipedia… incredible, they come up on page one of Google! Maybe their site is optimized!”Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or feature of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” or un-paid (”organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. Typically, the earlier (or higher) a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a web site web presence. As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work and what people search for. Optimizing a website primarily involves editing its content and HTML and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines.”The top 5 SEO realities for b-to-b marketers:1.Without SEO, your website is just a virtual brochure that your salespeople have to “hand out”. If that’s OK by you, stop reading.2.Men are from Mars. Search engines are from Montreal (fact).3.SEO is not snake oil or complicated or expensive. But it needs to be managed by experts.4.SEO is just the ignition. SEM keeps things rolling along.5.SEO must be integrated into your sales / marketing / customer service mix. But then, you knew that, right?Let’s explore these, one by one…1. Without SEO, your website is just a virtual brochure that your salespeople have to “hand out”. If that’s OK by you, stop reading. Many b-to-b marketers build a nice-looking website for the primary purpose of having a virtual brochure for their prospects: prospects who have been contacted by a sales rep.Of course, sales reps can point prospects and customers to your site – your rep just gives them your url (website’s address). But that’s not how b-to-b buyers (consumers as well) go about buying things. People do research first. They try to get the best deal. And that takes homework. And your sales reps can’t possibly even come close to contacting the number of prospects who search for your product or service every single day by using search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN. etc.If your website is not optimized, it’s extremely unlikely that your site will be found on the first several pages of a search engine result. Try it: imagine you’re a prospect of your company. Now penetrate a two, three or four-word phrase (not a brand name automatically, but a generic phrase; this is how people search). Look at who is on page one or two. If you’re not there, but your competition is, you need to reckon about SEO.2. Men are from Mars. Search engines are from Montreal (fact).According to the website searchenginehistory.com, “The first search engine produced was ‘Archie’, produced in 1990 by Alan Emtage, a student at McGill University in Montreal. Archie helped solve [a] data scatter problem by combining a script-based data gatherer with a fixed expression matcher for retrieving file names matching a user query. Essentially Archie became a database of web filenames which it would match with the users queries.”Pretty simple! Mr. Emtage realized that to enable a massive amount of script to be searchable, along with associated file names, an “engine” of some sort was needed. Once people like Google caught on, the internet search world exploded. Google and others produced massive engines that could scour billions of pieces of information and return “search results” to your desktop in less than a second. But search engines won’t return relevant results from a website (really, web pages) if the site / pages are not built properly. That’s where SEO comes in.3. SEO is not snake oil or complicated or expensive. But it needs to be managed by experts.SEO is more than ten years ancient now. At first, SEO was indeed a technical, complicated tactic; that is, trying to figure out – and stay ahead of – the search engines and their ever-varying algorithms. Here are a few FACTS you should know about search engine optimization:A) Optimization is not voodoo: it’s a certain set of technical and non-technical things you need to do to your site to make it “found” by the search engines. Search engines have rules; you need to play accordingly.B) SEO does not have to be expensive. It does not (in most cases) require a total re-design of your website (after all, creative design is permanently costly). To be SEO-ready, most sites require some creative and navigation tweaking, but not a creative overhaul. SEO expenditure? Here are two of the more common models out there for typical websites:1) pay a one-time optimization fee that usually also includes keyword analysis and some basic tweaking of navigation and design… this can range from $3,000 to $5,000, and typically offers an option of monthly SEO maintenance (recommended) that may be $250 to $400 per month2) A narrow that lasts at least six months whereby the SEO firm tackles just about everything that SEO needs, from keyword analysis to design, links, submissions, content management, reporting and on and on… here you are typically paying $2,500 to $6,000 per month on a multi-month or year-long narrow.C) A website that is optimized works as a website should: it organically (meaning, without PPC or “pay per click” ads) draws visitors who are looking for your harvest or air force. Why do you reckon some sites are permanently organically on page one whereas others on page 17? It’s not luck; it’s SEO doing its thing as it should.D) SEO should be a key component of your marketing plot. It must be an ongoing tactic, since SEO is a living, breathing thing. It’s not “SEO-and-we’re-done.”E) “Don’t try this at home”… SEO experts are called “experts” for a reason. It’s like going to a specialist if you have a problem; you want the right people doing the work, and these people are charged with staying current in their field. Most firms that list “SEO” in addition to 15 other things they do (notably, design and web development firms), do not truly know SEO.F) SEO is measurable, search engine by search engine; keyword phrase by keyword phrase. This allows you to footstep results and modify your SEO specifics.G) SEO does take some time, but not all that long: expect to see initial meaningful, measurable results in three to four months, and some very nice results – if your SEO is done right – within six to nine months.4. SEO is just the ignition. SEM keeps things rolling along.Search engine optimization jump-starts your web presence. It ensures your web pages are found by the search engines, and thus by those who query. SEO is a combination of technical necessities (code, primarily) and the right (meaning, relevant) content on your pages. That’s the simple explanation: SEO is your ignition, if you will. Now comes a further key component: the wheels that keep you rolling. SEM (search engine marketing) is like those wheels. You need excellent wheels and you need to keep them balanced. You know what marketing means… you know that marketing is not certain by one tactic such as a brochure or a trade show or a sales tool or an ad. SEM is the same, and like marketing, SEM is only limited by your thoughts.Search Engine Marketing definedMany people define SEM as pay-per-click advertising: driving people to your site with keyword-targeted ads on Google and other sites. But it’s far more than that. SEM is utilizing a wide range of marketing tactics to drive traffic to your website, ensure a positive visitor experience, and generate “conversions”. (More not more than on conversions.)Reckon about SEM this way: find ways to get them to your site, then find ways to market to them once they’re there. Here are some vital SEM (search engine marketing) tactics to consider:CONTENT: SEO experts will help you make “search content”. But you can’t stop there. You need to continually add content and exchange content. Why?Because search engines are very smart, and they like sites that are evolving; they don’t like sites that get stale. Of course new content has to be purposeful and relevant. Surely you have new harvest, air force, recognitions, case studies and solutions, right?KEYWORD TRACKING: Your SEO people should help you footstep the performance of your site, by page and by keyword phrase. Exchange accordingly.HOW-TO’s, PDFs, FREE DOWNLOADS: Place forward information that is of value to your customers and your prospects: how-to pages, white papers, refreshed Q&A pages.E-MAIL MARKETING: How can this be part of SEM? Simple: your e-mail campaign, whether simple e-mails or e-newsletters, should drive people to your existing – and to new – pages on your site. This lifts traffic and improves your rankings in the search engines’ eyes.PAY-PER-CLICK (PPC) CAMPAIGNS: PPC campaigns, one of the most common SEM tactics, can drive web traffic, elicit sales leads and help with your optimization. Use PPC to kick-start your SEO. PPC ad campaigns can be set up quickly, can have modest or aggressive daily budget limits, can be modified on the glide, and are measurable with built-in analytics.BLOGS AND FORUMS: Making a simple blog (even one that does not attract a lot of participants) can help you a lot with your SEO. Search engines like it when you post news, add keywords to the post and point the post to one of your web pages. It’s also honestly simple to set up a blog on your website that allows interaction.ONLINE VIDEO: Yes, video. Yes, YouTube. Even in the b-to-b selling environment, people like to watch videos – so they get a lot of views. (Of course, relevant, informational content). Videos on your website generate interest and traffic, and videos in turn can help you promote your brand and your website address.INBOUND LINKS: Search engines like it when sites point to your site. No need for a lot of traffic; just the fact that they point helps with SEO. Keep your link building effort up, but make sure the sites are relevant to your business.5. SEO must be integrated into your sales / marketing / customer service mix. But then, you knew that, right? At this point in this article you should have realized that SEO does not operate in a vacuum. Nor is it a one-time fix. SEO needs to be integrated into your marketing mix and into your sales strategy. Virtually everything you do marketing-wise and sales-wise should include your website.Reckon of your website as the heart of your marketing effort: you need to keep it healthy, feed it, exercise it.Same with sales: use your website to elicit sales leads, educate customers and prospects, maybe even entertain. And call on your salespeople to report on competitors’ sales, marketing and web-based tactics so you can counter with your own.CONCLUSIONWell, it’s pretty simple: SEO is a reality today. It’s your ignition, with SEM being your wheels. Things exchange. You’ve adapted to other changes in your business or in your marketing career; it’s time to exchange to a “search” driven organization. After all, “search” is also a reality – a huge one. It’s the way people start their buying process.

Make Your Website Rank Higher In Major Search Engines! Benefits Of CSS In SEO

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a style sheet language that permits web designers to attach style like spacing, color, font, etc. to HTML documents. Cascading style sheets work similarly to a template; permitting web developers to categorize style for an HTML element and after that apply it to the number of web pages required. Thus, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) are collections of formatting rules, which control the appearance of content in a web page. With CSS styles you have fantastic flexibility and control of the exact page appearance; from precise positioning of layout to specific fonts and styles.
There are many benefits of using CSS. One of the major benefits of using CSS is the simple maintenance of the website. Maintenance of a website made with CSS is much simpler compared to the ones which are table based. CSS splits the presentation style of documents from the content of documents and makes the maintenance of the site simpler. Aside from being able to make site extensive changes with no distress through one CSS file, the clean code it generates makes it simpler to update. Webmasters can characterize the appearance of a site in one place, and exchange the total site by varying just one file. With CSS, when you choose to craft a exchange, you simply alter the style, and that element is updated involuntarily somewhere it appears in the site. So, if you have to alter the color of all pages in your site, you only have to edit one style sheet. This saves you enormous amount of time, particularly if you have to edit each page independently. CSS generally requires less code compared to table based. This makes your code lighter and cleaner. Clean code makes a huge difference in maintaining your site.Cascading Style Sheets Benefits and Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
A further major benefit of CSS is that it makes your website SEO friendly. The reason behind this is simple. The search engines spiders are really very lethargic. They do not go through the bundles of HTML codes to get to the indexed codes. Font tags and tables make the HTML code very cumbersome; thus, reduce the accuracy of the results. If you use outdoor CSS files to design and determine the design attributes; the HTML code will be clean and it will result to better search engine rankings. With some knowledge of CSS you will be able to exchange the code layout without destroying the actual visual layout. For instance, you could easily make the main content of your site to show up above the header or navigation menu in the code of your website; thus will help to show search engine crawlers the importance of your content. I personally saw a huge boost in rankings in fully CSS web sites. When I look at a name’s website that was built using ancient school HTML code with tags such as: TABLES, TD, TR, FONT and so on, I feel awkward and immediately exchange that site to a fully table-less CSS layout. There are many tools on the Internet that shows the actual code over text ratio weight of your site. Do you know why? Because modern search engines such as: Google, Yahoo and MSN like light-weighted websites. They want to see your content; the text, not the code. With CSS everything is possible. You practically externalize excessive code into outdoor file, thus leaving the actual page clean and simple.Website Accessibility
CSS makes your website more accessible. The number of users browsing the web through hand held devices are continuously growing tremendously. It is estimated that by 2008, one third of the world’s populace will be using hand held devices for accessing Internet. It is permanently vital that your site is accessible to them also. You can make an bonus CSS document particularly for handheld devices like cell phones, which will be called up in place of the fixed CSS document; which is not achievable with a tabular layout. CSS benefits accessibility chiefly by separating document structure from presentation. By separating style from markup, webmasters can simplify and clean up the HTML in their documents, making the documents more accessible.Increases Download Speed of Your Website
CSS code downloads quicker than tables. Browsers read through tables twice previous to exhibiting their contents; first to work out their structure and then to determine their content. Moreover, tables are shown on the screen as a total, no part of the table will be showed until the entire table is downloaded and rendered. Tables support the use of spaced images to help with positioning. CSS generally requires less code than cumbersome tables. All code to do with the layout can be placed in an outdoor CSS document, which will be called up just once and then stored on the user’s computer; while the table layout stored in each HTML document, must be loaded up each time a new page downloads. Also with CSS, you can manage the order of the bits and pieces downloaded into the screen. You have the control to make the content appear previous to the slow loading images, which is liked by most of the web users.Thwart Browser Compatibility
For all webmasters out there! CSS makes your website more qualified. Taking the benefits of CSS like making your websites load quicker and simple to maintain, you save a lot of time and labor. This in turn makes you lots of cash. CSS makes links of the website look more attractive and dynamic. Using CSS, you can slot in rollovers easily and effectively, without having to use a single character of JavaScript. Thus, CSS gives your websites a qualified look. It is wise to use CSS to jive with the current trends of the industry. All major browsers like Firefox, Explorer, and Netscape presently recognize CSS and it is certainly safe for web designers to use CSS now.

Avoiding SEO Brain Freeze Part Two – Creating a Keyword Phrase Map

Friday, August 13th, 2010

In part one of the Avoiding SEO Brain Freeze series, we looked at the 7 steps necessary to finding the most appropriate keyword phrases for which you will ultimately optimize your website. My hope is that you have spent some time compiling a total slew of keyword phrase spreadsheets, and now you’re ready to start figuring out how to incorporate them into your website.

Through the years, I’ve urban a process of making a keyword phrase map as the 2nd component to our clients’ SEO campaigns. If you follow the steps outlined not more than, it should keep you organized and help you avoid the dreaded SEO brain freeze when attempting to optimize your website on your own.

The 9 Steps to Making a Keyword Phrase Map

Step #1: Make a new database, and add headings across the top which correspond with your home page and each of your top-amount main category pages. These should be pages that are in the main navigation of your website, which are linked to from every page of the site. This sheet will ultimately be your keyword phrase map.

Step #2: Review your keyword phrase lists you previously compiled and highlight the 3-5 of them that are the most competitive but also highly relevant to what your business and website is all about. These will be the phrases you’ll target on your home page. Copy and paste them under the home page bearing of your new database and mark them as “home page” in your ancient keyword database.

Step #3: Look at the existing information/copy on your top-amount main category pages of your website and check to see if they are by now genuinely using any of the keyword phrases from your keyword lists. These pages are the best candidate pages for those phrases, as they will be simpler to edit than pages that aren’t currently using them the targeted phrases. Make note of which phrases exist on which pages by highlighting them and marking them on your keyword research list, then add them under the bearing for that page on your phrase map database.

Step #4: Once you’ve completed step #3 for all your top-amount category pages, you may also want to branch out into your deeper, sub-category pages if you still have a number of unhighlighted keyword phrases from your original keyword list.

Step #5: Take the phrases that you haven’t by now found pages for, and search your website to see if they’re genuinely being used on any deeper pages of your website. You can do this via your website’s own site-search feature (if you have one) or you can use Google to search your site.

To use Google simply type the following command into its search box:

“your keyword phrase” +site:www.yoursite.com

This will show you all pages of your site that have the exact keyword phrase contained on them by now. Make note of these in your keyword spreadsheets and add the bonus inner pages to your keyword phrase map database, as well.

Step #6: Review the keyword phrases for which you have not yet found a related page, and choose if they are indeed vital for your website to be found under in the search engines. Thwart-out or remove those from the list that you determine may no longer be necessary.

Step #7: For the keyword phrases you have left, redo your site searches using your phrases, but this time, without quotes. This will bring up the pages of your site that have the individual words from your keyword phrases on them, rather than the exact phrase. These may very well be excellent candidate pages for those phrases, as well. Read through them carefully to be sure, and if they look like a excellent fit, exchange your spreadsheets accordingly.

The above steps should have helped you easily identify pages that are by now using your keywords or phrases. Most likely, you will still have a number of keyword phrases from your original database that still haven’t found a home on your website. This will be especially right if your existing website doesn’t have much copy on it to start with.

The next steps will require you to use your brain a bit more in order to choose which of the keyword phrases that you have left make significance on the which pages of your website.

Step #8: Carefully read through each page and choose what its ultimate theme is.

Step #9: Review your remaining keyword phrases and look for those that fit in with the theme of each page. Ideally, you’ll be able to find a excellent home (page) for most of the rest of your keyword phrases.

Step #10: For any remaining keyword phrases that you simply cannot find an existing corresponding page, once again, choose if they are really vital to be found for in the search engines, and remove any that you can live without.

Step #11: For those keyword phrases you have left, which you have single-minded are indeed vital to your website, reckon about why you don’t have any existing pages of your website where they fit into. If your website is structured correctly, there should be pages available for all relevant keyword phrases. At this point, you may have found the hole in your website that needs to be plugged. That is, you probably need to make some new pages that can genuinely support the keyword phrases that don’t currently have homes.

Step #12: Reckon about how you can make new content for your website which will genuinely be able to utilize those last keyword phrases. This may be as simple as count some articles to your website that genuinely use them. Or you may need to add some new top-amount or sub-amount pages to your website to support these phrases. In this case, you’ll also need to redo your site architecture and its overall navigation. But if those keyword phrases are indeed vital to you, they really should have a place on your website, so it’s really vital to perform this last step.

That’s it! You should now have all your vital keyword phrases mapped to the existing pages of your website on a nice, clean database. In the next article in this series, I’ll clarify where you go from here!

Top 10 Reasons Why you Shouldn’t Choose That SEO Agency

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

In order to achieve significant results, an effectual SEO strategy must involve the website’s content, optimising HTML, information distribution, the texts and site architecture in order to make the website content more visible and relevant.

A simplistic approach usually means troubles, or rather, a waste of cash. Here is a list of top ten of ways to notice (and avoid) a not serious SEO outfit.1. Here is your “Top 50″ “Top 100″ or “Guarantee positioning” package.Yeah..really…

There is no way of predicting which spot any given site can reach on any search engine for any keyword. The actual ranking of a site is a function of a number of ever-varying interactions which are not in the hands of the search engine outfit. Besides the engines themselves periodically varying their ranking logics, in this very second there are hundreds of websites and search engine agencies working hard to improve their positioning for the keyword “London hotel”. How can you honestly ensure you will rank at the top of them?

And moreover… who cares? The spot of a given keyword is NOT the objective of a SEO activity. Nor it is a paramether to measure your online success. The number of top rankings for over-inflated keywords is not going to affect your EBITBA. Conversions and CPA are.

A serious search engine outfit will rather get committed on the quantity and feature of traffic (conversions!), and to bring you tangible sales leads (and should be able to give you more clever advices then just try to get your traffic from the same ancient 50 obvious keywords).2. We don’t do doorway pages. These are “landing pages”.

BMW used to reckon it didn’t make much difference. Then, its website completely disappeared from Google. Search engines can discriminate between proper landing pages and spamming, and can ban you in a second, making all your investments go up in smoke. Be sure landing pages are what they should be, an informative landing enviroment which is fully integrated in your navigation and content structure.3. It’s ok to spend 95% of your online budget on pay-per-click.

Meaning:”Getting you your honest share of traffic from SEO might take a bit more effort on our side and we do not really care about your distribution expenditure”.4. SEO is just about throwing in in some metatags.

Meaning:”We do have a feeling that there are other key factors…off-the page elements such as blogs, social bookmarking, press releases, viral content, advanced link popularity and linkbait are just as vital as metatags for search engines, but really, we haven’t got a clue of how to do that material.”5. PPC is more controllable than SEO.

Meaning:”Achieving and tracking SEO results seems kind of hard, let’s do some ppc advertising instead”.6. We guarantee you get ranked in 15 days.

Option 1:”No, not in Google really, just in 20.000 obscure search engines.”

Option 2: “We will get you a top spot in Google for ‘design luxury yet budget accomodation providers in the tundra’ (with exact phrase match)”.7. We only specialize in search engines.

Meaning: “What happens when a user arrives to your site is not our business and we don’t know much about usability or what it takes to generate a booking on a travel website”.8. Yeah, we are a web outfit but will do the search engine for you.

Sounds like: “I’ve been plumber for the last 30 years, but I will fix with your electrical system for some extra cash”.9. You don’t need to do any work on your website.

Meaning:”Deleting that annoying flash intro page would ruin the user experience. And count some appealing content is not necessary. Not that many people really use search engines to book their travel anyhow”.Hint no. 10 is open for discussion: post your comment and contribute to the black list!

Paid Search Advertising: the Best Insurance Policy for SEO

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

SEO (that’s Search Engine Optimization) seems to have started 2008 on the incorrect foot. A lot of clients are telling mus that they have experimented with it in the past, saying they hired a name who promised top rankings in Google but never came through. Jeremy Schoemaker even compares SEO’s to slimy car salesmen.

Make no mistake–any guarantee from an SEO is a red flag. There simply is no way to guarantee results, and anyone who does so should be dealt with cautiously. To know why, let’s have a look at the business strategy behind search engines. (As permanently, Google serves as the best example, since it holds about two-thirds of the search engine market.)

Google, Inc. pulled in nearly $17 billion in revenues in 2007. Where does the bulk of this cash come from? Despite a wide array of all-stars in Google’s product line, only one program really runs the show: AdWords.

The reason AdWords is such a strong product, constantly growing its base and reshaping the entire global advertising industry, is that it provides targeting opportunities that were previously impossible. And Google is such a excellent search engine that the volumes of users make unheard-of economies of scale.

For as far as the eye can see, Google and the SEO community will be locked in a battle to outdo each other. Why? Because any compromise in the ability to target audiences threatens Google’s ability to keep making cash. Its engineers continuously refine the algorithms that match keywords with web content. Yet despite the well-guarded secret recipe behind these algorithms, thanks to effectual communication and tireless trial-and-error, SEO’s ultimately uncover these secrets and sell their intelligence to the business community.

When you place it that way, SEO sounds a bit criminal, doesn’t it? But a lot of SEO’s (the “white hat” variety) are simply in the business of getting their clients to the top of the search rankings for their niche or area of expertise. This might be deemed a responsible use of SEO.

The problem is, not all SEO’s (and their clients) are this modest. So much like the one kid who acted out in grade school, because of these rogues, we all have to be punished.

Google wants its algorithms to choose who is #1. SEOs want to wiggle through the algorithms and force their clients into #1. The larger guns tend to prevail, which is why SEO’s will nearly permanently fall fleeting of their guarantees.

Now for the irony: if these clients want a sustainable stream of new business from the internet, pay-per-click (PPC) advertising programs like Google AdWords are usually the best way to go. And targeted search results are the bedrock of an optimized campaign.

The moral of the tale? It pays to invest in SEO and PPC concurrently, for a few reasons:

1. You’ll maximize exposure in both the sponsored and organic Google results.

2. You’ll be protected against the inevitable and frequent search engine algorithm changes.

3. You’ll inspire confidence in prospective customers who see that you haven’t just paid your way to the top.

Google tends to know a bit more about search engines than a syndicate of mere mortals. If we play by their rules, the pie will be larger for everyone.
