]]> Google AdSense is the Google program where you can host pay-per-click ads on your Web site. When someone clicks an ad, you earn money. Simple as that.

Is it really as easy to make money with Google AdSense as many would lead you to believe? Now that I’ve become heavily involved with managing Google AdSense programs for my clients, I can see it’s not all play and no work.

Unfortunately, a lot of people bought into the idea that there was a lot of easy money to be made and they are now finding out they aren’t making nearly as much as they thought they would. Additionally, Google has a lot of prohibited practices when it comes to AdSense, and too many Webmasters are finding out they violated Google’s policies after the fact – often because they never bothered to read the AdSense policies in the first place.

Webmasters must not only comply with AdSense policies, but their web sites must also comply with Google’s webmaster policies.

Prerequisites for Making Money with AdSense

To make money with Google AdSense you need plenty of traffic coming in to your site or there won’t be anyone to click the ads. Web site promotion techniques, especially search engine optimization and article marketing will bring more traffic to your site. You also need to have content that will attract the ads with the highest Pay Per Click (PPC) rate that are relevant to that content. Then, you need to lay out your web pages so the ads blend in with your Web site. Studies have revealed that people who visit sites that contain ads that use colors that are not in harmony with the actual Web site tend to develop “ad blindness”. Meaning no matter how much traffic comes into your site, chances are no one will click the ads because they’ll be ignoring them. If no one clicks, you make nothing.

Dealing with Competitors                 

If you offer products or services on you Web site, the first thing you’ll notice when you begin hosting PPC ads is that many of the ads are coming from your competitors. Therefore, you’ll want to put ads on pages that aren’t earning you any money, or do like I did and not put ads on your site until you’re so busy anyway you’d rather make a few dollars off of your competitors than to continue turning business away with nothing to show for it.

Google AdSense allows you to specify up to 200 URLs for sites you want to bar from placing ads on your pages. The problem is that most times you won’t know the competitors are out there until their ads appear.

Google offers three ways to make money from them:

Google AdSense Payments

Google will not issue an AdSense payment until your earnings exceed $100. Unfortunately, there are loads of Google AdSense Forum entries about Web site operators who accumulated $90 or more in click through earnings only to get banned from Google and not get paid anything at all before they ever reached $100. This may be because Google doesn’t take a close look to see if you’re complying with their guidelines until it comes time to pay you. So yes, there’s a lot more to the story than meets the eye.

]]> Adsense is hot, no doubt about it. So hot in fact that many people are jumping on the bandwagon with the hopes of getting rich without any clue to what they are getting into. Take a quick second and do a search on EBAY for Adsense sites and you’ll see what I mean. The titles of most of these auctions are absolutely ridiculous…. “Make ten thousand dollars a month if you buy a site from me!!!” The list of these cookie cutter Adsense sites goes on and on and on. But can you really make any money by plopping down $50 bucks on one of these ready made sites?
Sadly, the answer in most cases is no.
First of all, if the person that sold you the site was really making hundreds or thousands of dollars a month from ‘similar Adsense sites’ do you really think he or she would be selling them on EBAY for $30??? Probably not. Most likely the seller in these cases is just a web designer shooting out as many cheap websites as they can, trying to cash in on the craze. They build the site, you buy it, and the relationship ends there. You now own a website that has zero traffic. Which translates to zero money. And to make it worse, the person you just bought the site from will most likely relist an exact duplicate the day after your transaction is completed. Causing your site to become even more worthless in the eyes of the search engines.
So what is a person to do that really wants to start an Adsense site business?
Well, there are really two paths that you can choose at this point. If you have the knowledge to build and promote your own website or websites then obviously this is the route you should take. But the majority of the people jumping in on the Adsense craze today are people that have zero knowledge in these areas, so where should they start?
Start with a basic knowledge of what it takes for a site to be successful with surfers and the search engines. By now you’ve certainly heard the phrase ‘Content is KING’. And it’s true. So when considering building or purchasing your first website you should take a look at the content and make a plan to keep the site fresh content wise, for both surfers and search engines. This means that you’re going to probably have to update your site from time to time. But how do you do this if you have no programming skills or html knowledge?

I’d love to fix it, but I put the adsense in through a gadget, and nowhere in the gadget can you change that URL. Is blogger just going to do this automatically? Do I have to worry about it?ve tried everything you can possibly do…anyone out there able to help?

I have a group blog and I am the moderator. My group e-mails me updates and a TRY to copy them and paste them into the blog. It doesn’t work so I have been copying everything word for word. HELP!

I’ve tried right-clicking, Control C & then V…pasteing the e-mails into a word doc first….nothing works…what gives???

There is another way to paste inside the post editor (other than right click mouse).

Copy your text. Leave your cursor flashing inside the post editor. Use your menu bar, left click mouse on Edit/paste. All your text will appear inside your post editor! PC World is proud to unveil its brand new community platform, based on Jive Software’s ClearspaceX platform. You can check it out right now!

The new community platform retains our popular message-board discussions while adding robust features such as blogs and wiki documents. PC World community members have more freedom than ever to express themselves, discuss news and issues, troubleshoot and solve problems, and write their own tech encyclopedia. Differences From the Previous PC World Community

The community has undergone a few major changes in its layout, as well. First, the PC World site navigation on the left side of the page is gone, replaced by community-specific navigation. Additional community-specific navigation is available across the top of the page, under the PC World header and the horizontal ad. The vertical ad on the right side of the page is also gone, allowing the community the full width of the page. In addition to the forums, which are now called discussions, we’ve added access to two more content types: documents and blog posts.

Top Navigation

Click to view full-size image. At the top of every page is a horizontal navigation area designed to help you get around quickly and efficiently. From this list, you can create new content, see Your Stuff (including your profile, your preferences, your open questions, and content you have created), examine your History (items you have recently viewed), or browse (blogs, documents, discussions, tags, people, or communities).

‘What’s New’: The Community Home Page

The “What’s New” page has pointers to three new content types: the current top members for the entire community, a full list of communities, and a list of everything that has been posted to the community in reverse chronological order, with the newest items on top.

Each linked item in the list has an icon next to it, so you can quickly identify it by its content type. You will also see how long ago it was posted and where it was posted. The user name of the post’s author, linked to that person’s profile, appears along with that person’s avatar. You can filter this list by content type, or you can create a custom view that shows content from forums that are of particular interest to you.

The community’s three content types are identifiable by icons and a new color scheme: a silver speech bubble (and a gray-blue background) for discussions, a green circle (and a light green background) for blogs, and a yellow page icon (and a pale yellow background) for documents. Top Members

Top Members Underneath the list of communities is the new top-members list. Members are ranked according to their point totals, and members with the highest rank are shown here with their avatar and rank icon. Top members in the entire community appear on the home page, while top members in individual topic communities are highlighted on those pages.

Communities

CommunitiesWhat we used to call a “forum” is a “community” in Clearspace. These individual topic areas are listed along the left side, and are mostly the same as they were in the previous PC World forum. Each community contains its own discussion forum, blog, and array of wiki documents. Content can be linked across communities by tags.

Popular Tags

Popular TagsBelow the list of communities is a tag cloud, a collection of the most popular tags from around the entire PC World community (and in specific topic communities, on those pages). The larger the font, the more popular the tag is. You can click on any tag to see a list of all content tagged with that word or phrase. See our “About tags and tag groups” wiki document for more information.

Diving In: Inside a Community

Click to view full-size image.When you enter a community, you will see a tabbed interface that provides an overview of all content in the community, plus “What’s New”; you may also go straight to the discussions, blog, or documents for that community.

To create content, select the appropriate link from the Actions menu on the right side: Create a discussion, Create a document, or Create a blog post.

For more detailed information on specific content types, search for items tagged with that content type. For all documents relating to the platform, search for the tag “clearspace”.

The Points System

Instead of basing user status levels on the number of posts, we have switched to a points-based system that awards points for participation as well as contributions. You receive points for starting discussion threads, making blog entries, and creating wiki documents. You also get points when other members of the community find your message-board posts helpful or accurate in answering questions. View a list of the points per action and user ranks in our “Community Points System” wiki document.

Posting Questions

Click to view full-size image.If you are asking a question in the discussion area, you now have the ability to mark your thread as a question. This clearly identifies it for members who are looking to help.

Click to view full-size image.A message at the top of the forum thread will indicate whether the question is answered or unanswered, and how many helpful or correct answers are available. Each thread can have a maximum of one correct answer and two helpful answers. The member who asked the question is responsible for designating helpful and correct answers for the awarding of points.

Converting Discussions to Documents

Converting Discussions to DocumentsOur community generates so many great tips, tricks, and solutions, but finding these nuggets of wisdom can often be challenging. Lots of great information gets buried under other forum threads. Now, however, when a message thread contains really useful information for other members, you can easily turn the discussion thread into a wiki document.

When you click the Convert thread to document button on any discussion thread, the system automatically loads the thread content into a wiki template. From there you can edit the thread into a concise wiki document and submit it for approval. When you convert a thread to a wiki document, a link within it automatically connects back to the thread; that way, should a reader of the wiki document want to see the original discussion, they can do so with one click.
