Can Renewable Energy Power Islands Like Haiti?

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Ken Daniel, of Security Advisors Worldwide, or SAW, a renewable energy security advisory company contracted by Jetstream Wind, Inc. recently returned from the island of Haiti.

I know that you and Security Advisors Worldwide had a very successful trip to Haiti.  There doesn’t seem to be a fantastic deal of media coming from this nation as to the daily lives of Haitians, the environmental issues they face, or the energy issues they’re looking at.

So that we can have a better picture, can you start by talking about what it’s like for average citizens in Haiti on any given day?

Mr. Ken Daniel:

On an average morning in Haiti, people there don’t wake up to the possibility of electricity like we do here. They pretty much use coal to warm themselves in the morning. There also aren’t the refrigeration capabilities like here in the states, so they walk to the market everyday to get whatever food they can prepare and eat that given day.

As far as the issue of water goes, in the capitol of Port-au-Prince there was some running water, and I would see people on the exteriors of buildings filling up their water containers. But out in the rural areas, it’s more hard and being pumped out of wells.

Along the roadways are fifty-five gallon plastic drums to the top with water. Haitian citizens in the end walk some distances to these to get their daily water since there aren’t many vehicles owned by confidential citizens.

There’s obviously not a large availability of electricity in Haiti, which seems odd in this day and age. Where does this issue stem from?

Ken:

There’s a hydro-plant that rests in-between Port-au-Prince and Hesh. It was really built by Americans in the early part of the last century and has been around for a very long time. Place simply, it’s just ancient and doesn’t kick out enough power.

All of the power lines that we take for granted here in the US, really have cobwebs growing on them in Haiti. And then, with the terrible weather, hurricanes and such, there were numerous poles leaning at 45 degree angles with wires coming out of them.

The only real power was in the capitol of Port-au-Prince and it goes off evenly. Frequently though, what I saw were people with candles and bags of coal to cook their food. Really, unless you are a person with a small bit of cash and can meet the expense of to be affluent, you can’t rely on the comfort of being able to depend on electricity.

With the hurricane situation, the lack of food and excellent shelter, renewable energy reasonably possibly could be the key to bringing in some the needed electricity to help with the situation.

This would be the first renewable energy technology being urban on an island, which is monumental. Would it be more hard making wind, solar, or hydrogen power on an island in the midpoint of the ocean as opposed to it being urban on a mainland?

Ken:

In this particular place, nearly everything that is needed can literally be brought to the land. With hydrogen technology for example, an area of land is cleared where it won’t require much manipulation as this technology is easily able to be placed. An added benefit to that is there won’t be any deforestation.

With solar technology, a further small piece of land within a vast spread of land is cleared and the technology placed upon it. Lines won’t have to be ran over long expanses of land for fuels, diesel, or natural gas. There won’t ever be an oil spill or pipes in the ground that eat away.

So it doesn’t seem to be too hard. Exporting equipment out of the United States and importing to an island would be the main issue to be dealt with. Jetstream Wind would have to look at building an airstrip so that they can cargo glide equipment in. Most building materials would have to be imported from the U.S., which is 300 miles off the coast of Miami, and would either come in by cargo plane or shipped in by sea.

It would be a benefit to take the time and see if there was anything available on the island that can readily be used, salvaged and recycled.

The terrain in Haiti (being an island) is more than acceptable. There are mountains, which means the wind is constantly blowing across them. There’s plenty of sunshine bright on the hills that are vast, rounded and able to be navigated. Even the new hydrogen technology can easily be implemented there.

If Haiti were to bring renewable energy in, it could be place somewhere. It wouldn’t have to be placed in a major metropolitan area, and the power from the renewable energy plant(s) could run to the pre-existing grid. The hope would be, but that Haiti itself would help to re-build the infrastructure so that all of this power could get to the homes, schools, hospitals, businesses and other places where electricity is vitally needed.

The truth is that they would have to wait far longer to get any other type of an energy program in, such as coal for example. There are also some pretty severe issues with deforestation happening at present, and so I would reckon that renewable energy is really the only way to go for Haiti right now.

Looking at the environmental impression of renewable energy on Haiti, would you say that there would be any, at all, produced from this technology?

Ken:

As compared to a coal-fired plant here in the United States, no, other than having to clear small pieces of land to place things on.

There are many countries that simply have to have energy right now, and this is by far the cleanest way to get it. Nuclear is not the answer. It leaves a long-standing residue as a result of that power. Natural gas and coal also lead to numerous environmental concerns.

The fact is that we can’t rely on oil for our needs any longer and I don’t want to see any more damaging changes in the land. This won’t. And the residue from this technology won’t be a larger burden for the Earth. What’s cleaner than water?

But it really doesn’t topic what country it’s in as far as getting the renewables to work for people. It’s the technology that Jetstream Wind has that hits the central point of this total thing. In other words, if the technology can get there and the transmission lines can get ran, then this can work nearly somewhere.

Working through the issues of basic infrastructure, transmission, politics, and environment, a company like Jetstream Wind is the right answer for those people.

Did the Haitian government welcome you and the possibility of a Jetstream Wind collaboration?

Ken:

Yes. I was treated very well. I was able to meet with the US Ambassador to Haiti, the advisor to the Head of Haiti, several Prime Ministers, and the necessary others that would become involved should we all come together and build a renewable plant there.

Other than simple barriers with the French-Creole language, it was a very successful meeting and everyone was excited. It went from one meeting to five or six, with them wanting me to speak with as many leaders as possible in my fleeting time there.

This is a major project of which Jetstream Wind would probably want to share some sort of responsibility. How severely would the country of Haiti be involved and responsible in re-powering their nation?

Ken:

The United States produced a bailout for the auto industry. The country of Haiti will possibly need to make a financial bailout for their energy problem. They’re probably going to have to place some cash into the system to start readying themselves for this type of project.

Having the years of experience in large air force operations, I’ve cultured to back-plot for anything. In other words, I can see the end result, but previous to I can get there I have to first go all the way back to where it starts. It starts by asking questions…a lot of them.

In order for renewable energy to be a reality in Haiti, the Haitian government has to question themselves some questions so that Jetstream Wind and Security Advisors Worldwide can do our jobs.

How will they find the necessary people needed for this large of a project? How will they teach these people? Where are the people located and where is the transportation going to come from to go these people? How will they communicate?

There is a lot of work to be done from taking out ancient transmission lines and putting in new ones, to breaking ground on the energy plant itself. Power poles will be placed on every block. New construction companies will be built, taking into account everything that goes with that including the huge amount of labor needed.

We can also take into account the education necessary to work with a project of this type, making a inhabitant boost in knowledge. Anything from taking down a power line to managing a company with the large workforce will have to be covered.

It’s not only about the end result of the plant supplying renewable energy to the people. It also includes the entire scope of the process beginning with Haiti’s choice and ability to prepare for it.

In seeing the potential, meeting the representatives, and observing the culture, what is the one thing that you come back with?

Ken:

I come back with the insight that the country of Haiti is only a two and half hour flight from Miami. It’s not so far away that we can’t touch it with our help.

Small kids are walking distances, carrying the water they needed for the day. You have to remember we as a human race have also been to the moon. We’re building a space station. How is it possible that an island, so close to the United States is in the situation it is?

This has the capacity of making and developing a total new job infrastructure and economy. It is a prime example of renewable energy quickly effecting the situation for the better.

The capability is there to get it done. The land is there, the people are motivated, and the technology is ready to go. With the help of the Haitians in getting the infrastructure ready, a total new way of life can arise from this for the people of Haiti, and also the same possibility for other people and nations all over the world.

What strikes me the most from our conversation about renewable energy is its ability to thwart borders, boundaries, cultures, political policies, and even world religions without leaving gray footprints of various unwanted agendas.

Thank you once again, Ken, for sharing this information showing how people and technology can come together to make a clean, economically stable world for our future and our children’s futures.

Focusing Like a Laser Beam on the RIGHT Target Market For Your CPA Practice: Marketing Step One

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Most CPAs don’t have a strong enough foundation on the subject of marketing. Even in college, we focus a lot on accounting theory and hardly learn anything about real world marketing, despite the fact that many CPAs will be, effectively, small business owners running their own practices. If you’re like most CPAs and haven’t spent much time thinking about marketing, let’s start with nitty-gritty.
I reckon of marketing as the 3 M’s:
1. Market
2. Message
3. Media
Market first, message second and media third. The order is very vital. Most folks get it incorrect. They choose how and when to make known based on which advertising rep solicits them, which means they are early at the incorrect end.
Market:
The first step in developing a marketing strategy is to identify your target market. Many CPA practices make the mistake of skipping this step, but if you truly want to grow your practice, you must start with a clear significance of your ultimate clientele. Identify a group of people or businesses that fulfill the following requirements:
? You would really delight in working with these clients.
? They will recognize that working with you is elemental.
? They can be easily identified and contacted.
? They will happily pay what you’re worth, without negotiating.
Resist the impulse to serve anyone and everyone. You’ve heard the ancient saying “You can’t be all things to all people”? Remember it every time you’re tempted to try to market yourself to everyone. When you target the mass populace (everybody) as the ultimate client base, you will have a hard time differentiating yourself from others in your field. In fact, it’s pretty much impossible to make a specific message to speak to everyone in a way that makes them want to work with you – and making too many marketing messages could be confusing for prospective clients.
Without a clearly certain target market, you’ll also find it hard to establish yourself as an expert in a particular area, type of client or situation (remember that experts make more cash, get more clients, are more sough after by the media, etc.)
One of the most vital secrets of marketing is knowing WHO your ultimate clients are (the ones who’ll recognize that working with you is crucial to solving their problems, pay you what you’re worth and tell others about you), figuring out WHAT their particular issues are, WHY they’re having them and HOW you solve them. You have to start by defining your real ultimate market:
EXAMPLE of markets or niches that my firm targets:
- Businesses with revenues of $1.0 to $10M, with up to 50 employees, within 10 miles from my office
- Dentists within 10 miles from my office
- Chiropractors within 10 miles from my office
- Service professionals within 10 miles from my office
- Business owners who be in the right place to your place of worship
Notice how far any one of these demographics is from “anyone who’s willing to pay my fees.” That’s not to say, of course, that you’re going to turn away potential clients who aren’t in your niche market. But you can’t start to effectively target those in your most desirable market until you’ve clearly identified who they are.
Remember, the order is vital; market first and foremost, followed by message and then media. Make sure you’ve taken the time to clearly indentify your market.

So back to blogging… The wonderful thing about blogging is that it is really fun! Yes it’s right. Entrepreneurs, solo-preneurs and network marketers are really have more fun promoting their business today, with all these fabulous technologies at their fingertips.

You can do blogs for every niche, not just network marketing. You can build a community round your blog in order to make a following and to attract people to your harvest and air force. In turn you can then make more harvest and air force to satisfy this niche market.

Through the interactive nature of the blog it is very simple to encourage direct response from your readers, which can be invaluable marketing research. They will happily tell you what they delight in and what they are looking for.

It may be immediately if the timing is right for them, or it may be later if they choose they need to make a exchange.

I have heard it said many times that people join you in Network Marketing either because they:

a) See you as a chief who can help them get where they want to go, or

b) See the system you are using to be of value to them in building a business.

The best resource I have found for learning how to set up and run an effectual blog is ‘Atomic Blogging,’ by Alvin Phang. I wished I had found it previous to I had set up my first blog because it would have made the process a lot simpler for me!

What Does A Blogging Consultant Look Like?

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

You know, normally you can find a definition of a word or phrase by typing “define: your phrase here” into google and come up with a lot of results. Currently there are millions of blogs and there are hundreds of people who call themselves “Blog or Blogging Consultants”, yet when you type “define: Blogging Consultant or Blogging Consultant” into google you get no definition.
That is probably a excellent thing for most blogging consultants because without a definition, there is no standard to hold them to. I’m not claiming to be the blogging guru of all time or anything of the sort. So previous to you “blogging consultants” out there start getting defensive about this, reckon previous to you write. If you get too nasty about the post I may question you to define “blogging consultant” and without google many of you couldn’t do it.
Now that is out of the way, lets talk business. Every business should have a blog. There are so many reasons for your business to have a blog it would be hard to write them all in one blog post, so lets assume you know your company needs a blog.
So do you hire a blogging consultant? What qualifications do you look for in a blogging consultant? What does a blogging consultant look like? How much should I pay a blogging consultant?
Lets start with “Should you hire a blogging consultant?”
The quick answer is yes, but lets go into why first. There are a lot of things that go into making a blog standard. Technorati tags, submissions and pings to bloglists and blogsearch websites, learning how to get on the right blogrolls, etc.
If you are new to blogging it takes awhile to catch on to most of these things and most blogging consultants say that all of the above is necessary if you are going to have a successful blog.
There are more things to add to the list but this article isn’t about how to run a successful blog, it’s about blogging consultants. Hiring a blogging consultant can save you from making a lot of early mistakes and get your blog found a lot quicker than trying to do it on your own.
Now all the blogging consultants are liking me again. I can tell. But will it last?
What qualifications do you look for in a blogging consultant?
Here is where things get hideous between me and the blogging consultants. Most blogging consultants are . . . well . . . bloggers. Many of them have what they reckon is a successful blog even if many bloggers have different thoughts for what success is.
Some reckon it’s certain as how much they made on google adnonsense last month. Others count success by number of visitors to their website or the number of comments that appear on their blog. Still others measure their success by what the other bloggers reckon about them.
What do all of those bloggers who are blogging consultants have in common? They all reckon that having a successful blog involuntarily makes you a qualified blogging consultant. I told you it was going to get nasty. After this article if I measured my success by what the other bloggers reckon of me then I’m doomed!
Fortunately I don’t measure my success in terms of what the other bloggers and blogging consultants reckon. Lets get back to those qualifications for a blogging consultant.
First of all a blog is a website. It is a website that is updated evenly in most cases, but it is still a website. Each blogpost becomes a page of that website. So with a blog you are making more webpages to your website as evenly as you post to your blog.
Now I have a question for you. Would you first look to hire a blogger to do search engine optimization for your website? Would you first look to hire a blogger to handle your AdWords campaign? Would you first look for a blogger to build your website for you?
The answer to all of the above is probably no, unless the blogger also has experience in those fields and not just for their blog. Actual websites they have built, optimized, and marketed for themselves and for clients.
A blogging consultant should not just be a blogger. They should also have all of the skills necessary to run a website. Now the blogging consultants are all mad at me again. But reckon about it. Many bloggers know how to write. They know how to get into the right group of blogger acquaintances who will link to them. They know about blogging.
So if all you need to know is how to write a blog, then hiring a blogger who knows how to write is the answer, but if you need a name who is going to manage your blog for you including posting to the blog, search engine optimization, link popularity, (and not just from blogrolls), and marketing, then you need to hire a webmaster who also blogs.
Okay, How much should I pay a blogging consultant?
How much do you have? Just kidding. A lot depends on the type of blog you want or have. A corporation blog has to pay more, not because they have more, but because there are all kinds of legal and policy matters that have to be considered with every single blog post and every single link to or from a further blog or website. A small business blog doesn’t have many of the same issues as the corporate blog, but still has certain standards that need to be met.
If you have ever hired a webmaster, not a web designer, a webmaster, (Thats a further article), or a Search Engine Optimization Company, or a Search Engine Peddler, or even just a Marketing Consultant, (The just was in there just so I could make consultants mad again.), then you have an thought of what a blogging consultant should cost.
Now keep in mind, if you are hiring a blogging consultant to strictly teach you how to blog, then it’s not worth as much cash as when you hire a blogging consultant who is also going to perform all of the air force a Webmaster and Internet Peddler would provide plus search engine optimization.
Ha ha! I still didn’t say how much it expenditure. It’s coming. Read on.
What does a Blogging Consultant look like?
He or she looks like a name who has more than just a blog or blogs. A name who also owns and manages several websites for themselves and for clients. As I said previous to a blog is still a website.

Bloggers Are A Lot Like Pigeons

Bloggers Are A Lot Like Pigeons
So I’m sure many of you read the title and thought, “Where is he going to go with this one?”
Okay, I agree it sounds corny, but it is incredible how your mind frames things early on a cold, wet Midwest winter morning walking to the teach station (remember, a perfect morning involves staying in my sweats, not leaving the house, working on the computer). Now granted, I do hope most of us are potty trained better, have a more stable residence and a sharper mind when it comes to avoiding traffic, but stay with me and read on.
Both bloggers and pigeons are:
1. Vastly colorful and individual.
The flock of pigeons that served as my inspiration reminded me of how unique each one was physically. At a glance they may appear similar when you see a flock together as a tapestry, yet, it is remarkable how distinct the markings are to each bird. Just like our blogs; each possesses personal font-image-layout-color preferences, variances and nuances specific to distinguish us.
2. Tend to bobble, hunt and peck.
I don’t know about you, but I feel I resemble a pigeon as I hunt and peck across the keyboard with my head bobbling most the day! It’s crazy too how their permanently pecking at a touch they can see on the ground, or reckon they can see, and I can’t see it! Do we do that?
3. Friendly and respectful.
Pigeons and bloggers are a genuinely friendly, communal group. Even when pigeons are being fed they are respectful to one a further as they go in for their share–unlike seagulls. Granted, every now and then, one in the group gets a small “randy” and starts climbing on the other, but we know the motivation behind that behavior. Overall, they get along tremendously.
4. Very vocal.
Ever notice how much cooing goes on-especially when they congregate? I am amazed everyday as I sit with my feed reader at the wealth of intellect and insight mutual daily amongst us all! Maybe that’s why pigeons huddle too, because they have so much to share with one a further!
5. Free to travel.
Well, bloggers can travel somewhere Wi-Fi to blog, but isn’t that nearly the same today as having wings? What a gorgeous thing to no longer be bound to a brick and mortar model and be able to blog from the beach (its really pun here in Chicago along lakeshore beaches we have both pigeons and gulls out in the sand!).
6. Helpful.
Fellow worldwide bloggers I have been privileged to “meet” are some of the most incredible people I have ever had any fellowship with. Even if most bloggers are willing to lend a hand with information or a project, if they have the time, don’t forget that they might have to refuse or even not comeback because of time constraints, gray workloads, set principles, or a simple distaste with your lack of proper etiquette. You know what I am saying, don’t get so consumed with your own needs that you behave or come across disrespectfully to your fellow bloggers. Even pigeons do get ruffled and glide away.
Let me know what you reckon!

Avoid Looking Like a Wordpress Beginner Even if You are

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Some early WordPress hints. Exchange you login name to the name you want people to identify with the site. Don’t use the default name ‘admin’ to post articles unless you really want to get into the admin niche. Seeing your name makes it more personal and qualified.

Make a Category

WordPress has the default category called uncategorized. Having any articles uncategorized is terrible SEO and similar to calling a Word document ‘Untitled’. If it is called Untitled, it really does have a title and if you place a post in the category uncategorized, well, it has been categorized. Hasn’t it?

This setting can be changed in WordPress by going to Manage and selecting Categories

Make a Blogroll

People that come to your site will leave at one point or a further. No one gets to one site and remains there for weeks on end. With a Blogroll you can at least point your visitors to places that you like, those sites may point visitors back to you.

This setting can be changed in WordPress by going to Blogroll and selecting Categories

Link to other sites

Visitors come to your site from somewhere, evenly through comments you leave on other blogs. You should not just make comments on blogs, but write articles on your blog about other blogs and people referencing people by name and by website. This post: http://compnyname.com/web-content-conference-in-french has links to 5 people and 3 other sites. This generates excellent will and encourages the people and target sites to link back to your site.

Then go to the blog you allusion and in your signature link back to your post and not you home page. A link on a blog should end with “.com/?page_id=2″ and not just a .com as most people do.

Customize Your Permalink Structure

Which of these two links tells you a touch about the topic of the post that is presented on the website?

http://compnyname.com/?page_id=2

http://compnyname.com/web-lingo-getting-on-foreign-search-engines/submitting-your-website-to-a-chinese-search-engine

Both may get you to your destination, but the top option – the default – does nothing to help a reader get an thought of your post. This setting can be changed in WordPress by going to Options and selecting Permalinks

Write all your own articles

Or at least you should write most of your own articles. This is not a plot to pull sales from any other site, just stating that readers can tell when the article is not original. If really necessary, when you have a real writes block and can’t write one post you can use other articles for the base on an article that you build on. Don’t copy them for your core.

Writers Block

When blogging a post you learn that you don’t have a topic in mind – right writers block. Go to a blog related to your topic and give pointers that makes a 6 point how-to article.

Will you guess where the thought for this article came from?
