Tweet Little, Tweet Well
Sunday, January 24th, 2010There is a pronouncing,’Speak tiny, speak Well’ that appears on all sorts of bits and pieces. Some have attributed it to Benjamin Franklin, others to the Bible, and a few have even made a claim it originated as a Pennsylvania Dutch proverb. All three do have a touch similar enough to be accurate. About 300 years ago Benjamin Franklin outlined the virtue of silence with,’Speak not but what might benefit others or yourself ; avoid trifling conversation.’ There are at least two Proverbs in the Bible, one passage in Ecclesiastes, and one in the Epistle of James that also express the same thought. And, though my copy of’Stilted Shoe Wisdom’ is lost, I remember my grandma pronouncing,’Spreck klein, spreck gut!’ when my answers to her questions weren’t to the point. As children, we cultured that if we claimed too much, we might end up being questioned to do or verify a touch. Talking tiny, and being sure of our facts was the best way to stop this. We also exposed that folk really didn’t wish to hear us say the same thing over and over. But blogs and social networks are not that forgiving. Even if you remove a blog file from the server, there’s still an opportunity that somebody made a copy of it, or it became favored enough for a ‘bot to cache. Now there are blogs about just about everything, and many are very well written. Some even seem to be more mag or newsletter amount than the first diary style format. Until recently most of the people found out about blogs either thru a search engine or from a link, either from a forum, a further blog or from a mate. The blog writer has small control of the last 2 options, and must be careful when using the 1st. Most forums discourage blatant self promotion, so posters must be careful to scribble posts significant to the topic, and only post links to their blogs as signatures or when the blog provides bonus info on the topic. Then along comes Twitter, a site whose primary purpose seems to be,’Lookie what I did!’ For the most part this is fantastic. Twitter’s limited post size of only 140 characters is enough for a blurb and a link. If you have found 5 – 6 fantastic internet sites to link to, have one or two fleeting inspirational messages, or need to answer several folk, then posting a six different tweets at once could be what you want to do. Sadly there are some individuals that go more than a bit overboard. Some post,’Updated my blog’ repeatedly without any suggestion of the new blog entry subject. Since tweets frequently scroll off their supporters screens, this seems a honest practice, but many of those folk post the same few tweets 3 or 4 times inside a few mins. There are more tweeters that continually challenge the character limit by posting sequential tweets because they can’t fit what they need to say in 140, or even 280 characters. Mannered Tweeters : Twitter is a fabulous way to help in getting the word out about a new e-book or product. It’s a fantastic way to let people know about in the last part posted articles, and useful or engaging websites. And it’s helpful for updating relatives and buddies with no need to make tons of phone calls, or send a bulk e-mail. With careful use it can make a businessman ’s reputation. But abuse can just as simply ruin what had been a well run business by making the owner seem to be grasping, and self-centered. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgr_CELM1vQhttp://www.squidoo.com/tweetadderdeal
Forum Marketing – You’ve Got to Give a Little to Get a Little
Sunday, January 10th, 2010Basic etiquette and tips on how to master forum marketing . . .
Word of mouth and business networking are at the core of the forum marketing. Forum marketing is a form of promoting one’s self or business through free or paid online forums. It is not a quick advertising method, in that results may take weeks or months to start showing. Also, it needs lots of time and patience and is therefore best suited to those seeking to build a brand rather than increase immediate sales.
Most websites have a community forum for users to share their thoughts and opinions. There are also specific websites that are exclusive forums dedicated to a niche market. Hence there may be industry, gender, age or interest specific forums.
Where forums gain marketing importance is that most internet users research buy decisions online previous to really buying the product. For instance, a name looking to buy a LCD TV would get unbiased reviews from a techie belonging to an electronics forum.
By their very nature, forums are meant to be a community helping space and not a marketing device. As such, most forums frown upon and ban any user who actively promotes himself. There are very strict rules that are clearly outlined in posting guidelines and one should abide by them. Most forums do but allow you to back-link to your website via the signature field.
The best way to gain clout in any forum is to become an committed community member. Start by introducing yourself, then try to solve others queries without vested interest and occasionally bring to somebody’s attention a debate yourself to interact with other members. With time, you become an opinion chief of sorts and then your recommendations are worth more than marketing gold.
Of course, this is a long term relationship. If you cannot commit long hours to such work, it is best to join only a few select forums that will give you bang for buck. Start with forums that revolve around your own industry and then expand to more general forums once you’ve got the hang of it.
You may also consider hiring a qualified writer to better articulate your thoughts and expand your forum presence. There are also many online tools that will allow multiple posting simultaneously. But again this shows in the feature of your post content. Nothing can beat committed involvement where you read the previous posts and then add in your comments.
Forums are also a fantastic way to test an opinion / new thought/ product by way of a poll. Again, be transparent that the poll is for your own product and most of your forum acquaintances would be glad to help. If you become a well respected forum member chances that other members will recommend your product or service to a newbie seeking advice is very high – and very valuable!
In the end, give forums time. It is nothing but word of mouth in an online age. The neighbourhood store never got well-known in a day and chances are your efforts too will pay off when you keep at it persistently.
