One social networking site that has proved to be powerful is twitter. Currently, studies have proved that twitter is one of the fastest growing website. Therefore, whether you have an offline or online business you can use social networking websites as a platform to interact with your customers and more so get feedback on your products and services.

To increase your business brand name presence, you can offer customer service and support to your target market using twitter. This is because on twitter you will have the ability to offer quick response to your customers needs and thus improve your brand image. On twitter you can monitor and respond to customer issues via tweetbeep where notifications are sent directly to your customers email address.

Eliciting feedback from customers using twitter is also easy; ask your customers what they think about your products or services. This way you will get quick responses and also using the same platform, acknowledge their feedback.

Another powerful feature of twitter is retweeting. Retweet is where you re-post a tweet that was posted by your followers. Therefore, if you receive a valuable tweet you can opt to retweet the same. This will help you increase the number of people following you and more so get your posts retweeted. As a result you will reach other people who may later become potential clients.

Any business venture that fails to see and seize the opportunity that technology is offering is bound to be left behind. Social networking websites like twitter and facebook have shown that business owners are now in a position to reach a wide target market both locally and internationally.

There has been a huge buzz surrounding the advantages of using social networking websites to promote your home business. Websites like Twitter and Facebook have been hailed as the latest, greatest way to gain more traffic to your website, and promote business programs that you are involved with. But, did you know that there are ways that social networking can harm your efforts at running a successful business? That’s what this article is all about. Hopefully, many readers will already realize the importance of this, and will have taken action to avoid having social networking harm their business efforts. For those readers that think I must be off my rocker, this is a must read! The first and most common way that social networking websites, especially Twitter, can harm you business is by simply overusing the system. Because of it’s ease of use, many home business owners have become so caught up in using Twitter and other social networking sites for their promotion that they have abandoned other proven methods of business marketing. Rather then spend their business day writing articles, working on SEO for their website, etc., they will spend a few minutes on Twitter, promoting their business, update their Facebook Status or Notes for something to do with their business, and call it a day. This is the old saying about putting all your eggs in one basket, and it simply won’t work.Another way social networking promotion can hurt your business is with the age old “art” of Spamming. We are all familiar with the Junk folder in our email accounts, and how quickly it will fill up with unsolicited ads promoting everything under the sun. With the dawn of social networking, those who make spam a part of their business have found a new outlet. I can’t count how many times I see one person put up 4-10 posts in a row, and all of them are advertising something! I have received messages on Facebook, from people I barely know, selling me the latest “Get Rich Now” marketing gimmick. This does not make anyone want to buy into something, and may even make them angry enough to report you. If you spam consistently on Twitter, you can kiss your account goodbye, so why waste your time? The final harmful social networking factor that I will mention here applies more to Twitter than any other site. This is the use of programs that will automatically post tweets for you, all day everyday. The programs themselves are not a bad idea. The problem lies in the fact that many business owners use them as a “set and forget” type of marketing. If I see someone on Twitter making the same posts at the same time, week after week, it becomes obvious that this person has no interest in the social aspect of the site. I personally am more inclined to be interested in someone if that person shows an interest in me. After a few days of seeing the same tweets over and over, I stop viewing that person’s tweets altogether, and if they’re really overdoing it, I will unfollow them. So good job, instead of making a sale, you lost one more.If you partake in any of the methods I have mentioned here, I have a bit of advice for you:-Do not treat social networking sites as the ultimate advertising tool. While Twitter and others are useful, and do work well for business promotion, you need to use other methods too. The tried and tested marketing methods still work, and should be applied to your campaigns as well.-Do not spam your friends/followers. You are guaranteed to lose more sales than you make if you employ this method. It has been said that only 10% of your social networking time should be spent actually promoting. That means that 90% of the time, you should be adding something of value to your network. This way, when you do mention your business, people will be more inclined to pay attention.-If you use autoposting software for Twitter and other sites, keep it fresh. I personally try to use these programs only when I am away for a longer period of time. If you use these programs often, change your posts on a regular basis, to avoid having your message become old, stale, and ignored. If you use common sense, manage your time well, and stick to these guidelines, you can have a lot of success promoting your business through social networking. If you can’t do this, then you might be better off forgoing this marketing method altogether. At least don’t add me!

Kids and teenagers tend to browse social networking sites a lot – it is where they get news, meet new friends and share pictures or videos among other things that they can do in these sites. However, social networking sites prove to make kids and teens vulnerable as they post personal information for the whole internet world to see, making them easy preys for online predators.

Here are some tips that will help in protecting kids and teens when they browse and use social networking sites:1.Understand the site – you won’t know what you’re dealing with until you’ve checked it out for yourself. Read the privacy policy, terms of usage and conduct, find out which kinds of people use the site.2.Review pages – it would be best if you knew what your child or teen is putting on his/her profile page. Try to look at it objectively – meaning, you don’t intrude into their private lives as long as they aren’t doing anything wrong. Although if you see something on their pages that are against your rules, talk to them about it and tell them to remove it.3.Set internet rules – just as you have house rules, you must be clear about setting some internet rules that the kids must abide with, otherwise, they lose their browsing privileges.4.Don’t let kids and teens meet anyone they met online – with all the news we hear about online predators and their young victims, I think this point is clear enough and self-explanatory. We don’t want our kids to be the next one to be reported.5.Private information should remain private – remind your kids and teens not to use their real names, or at the very least, not their full names. They should also know that home addresses, landline numbers, web messenger ids and cellphone numbers must not be publicly seen on their profiles. If possible, they shouldn’t be putting those at all.6.Look for alternatives – there are a lot of social networking sites today, and some offer a good security measure to avoid anything that we don’t want to happen. Especially to our children. Advice your kids and teens to set the privacy of their profiles, limiting the views only to people they personally know.7.Be cautious about media – photographs and personal videos must not give away personal details like addresses, schools and car plates. Be sure to check the pictures and videos that your children are uploading.8.Emotions should be kept in check – kids, teens especially, tend to post highly-emotional entries on their blogs that some social networking sites provide. Advise them not to do this often as they tend to become more vulnerable to online predators. Warn them about the danger they might be in if they keep posting their personal feelings this way.9.Use web filters – this can help in keeping your kids and teens away from the bad sites, images, videos and other online materials that they should not be exposed to.10.Removing profile pages – if all else fails, you can contact the webmasters of the social networking sites your children belong to and ask them to delete your child’s profile permanently. These are just some basic steps on how to protect your kids and teens from the dangers social networking sites may pose. There are other things that a parent can do if they feel that their child really is in danger, but it is always a good idea to apply the necessary precautions to avoid dealing with something bigger and nastier in the future.

A Brief Look into the World of Social Networking

Undeniably, social networking has been one of the biggest internet fads to date, having millions of people subscribe and visit the countless social networking sites everyday. With the popularity of social networking these days, someone who isn’t taking part of all these can’t help but wonder if there are any real benefits to it all – whether if you’re personally using it or your company is using it. A lot of social networking members will claim that there are heaps of benefits to these kinds of sites so let’s take a look at some of them:

1. Building a “social network”

When you’re a member of social bookmarking sites, you get to meet friends the world over. You aren’t restricted to your own local community when it comes to meeting new people, unless of course, the social network that you belong to is restricted to your locality alone. These people can become mere acquaintances, friends or even business partners. Relationships in social networks tend to be flexible. Your social network can also be “specialized” depending on what you need a social network for.

2. Social networking sites have different categories

As stated in the first point, you can choose which social network you want to subscribe to depending on how you want to use it. There are different kinds of social networking sites:

    *

      Conventional and generic networks

    *

      News networks

    *

      Bookmarking networks

    *

      Business networks

    *

      Media-sharing networks

          o

            Video-sharing

          o

            Image-sharing

          o

            Music-sharing

    *

      Startpage networks

    *

      Fitness and sport networks

    *

      Widgets and plug-ins networks

    *

      Mobile networks

With the knowledge of the different kinds of social networking sites, you can easily choose those that are to your interests and build a network that will suit your needs as an individual, career-person or a business entity. For a more in-depth look at the many forms of the social networking world, you can check this list:

A good friend of mine who is also a social networking expert contacted me the other day and told me I had to stop saying “twittering” and say “tweeting.”

Well, she’s right. I was using the wrong term. However, I was actually doing that on purpose.

Before I tell you why, let me give you some background information. Right now, Facebook has 150 million users, Linked In has 34 million and Twitter has 4.4 million. I don’t have the numbers for MySpace, the last I heard it was still the biggest, but at least in terms of business use, a lot of people have moved away from MySpace to Facebook.

Now, there are thousands of social networking sites out there, but (as expected) a pecking order is starting to emerge. That doesn’t mean things won’t change in a few months, but for now, many business folks are focusing on the big 3 — Facebook, Twitter and Linked In.

Of those 3, Twitter has the least amount of users right now, although it’s growing very quickly. But, the difference between 150 million and 4.4 million, or even 34 million and 4.4 million is substantial. As you can see, of all the people at the social networking dance, a lot of them haven’t figured out the Twitter 2-step yet.

Now, that in itself isn’t a problem, but of all the social networking sites, Twitter has the most specialized vocabulary. So, this all adds up to me using the wrong words because I want to make it easier for people new to Twitter to grasp what I’m saying. (Besides, I actually hate some of the Twitter vocabulary — tweets? Peeps? Have we descended to the level of chickens and are now all hanging out in a giant hen house? But I digress.)

However, after considering it, I’ve decided my friend is right and I need to start using the correct terminology. Therefore, I decided to provide a short primer on what you’ll discover when you venture on Twitter.

First, what is Twitter? Officially, Twitter is called micro-blogging. I call it instant messaging on steroids. In a nutshell, you have 140 characters (including spaces) to say what you want to say. Twitter’s prompt on what you should be saying is “What are you doing right now?” While that is still a viable thing to talk about (after all, there’s a reason why reality television is so popular, we’re all extremely interested in other people’s lives) that’s not all you can do with Twitter. You can have conversations with people, provide tips and quotes, promote other people’s products/services/events and promote your own products/services/events.

Every time you type a comment, it’s called a Tweet. When you’re communicating with people on Twitter it’s called Tweeting.

If you see an RT or ReTweet, it means someone is repeating someone else’s Tweet. And, because people on Twitter want to give credit where credit is due, the person they’re ReTweeting has the @ sign with their Twitter name (so, for instance, if they’re ReTweeting me, you’ll see @MichelePW)

You also see that @MichelePW when people are having a conversation with each other. And, it’s not people but Peeps (although this is a little confusing because when people are following your tweets they’re called Followers.)

If you want to have a private message with someone, then you can Direct Message them, or DM them. (Note, I’d still be a little careful with your DMs as there have been times when that feature stops being private and instead turns into being publicly broadcast.)

Lastly, you’ll also notice a great deal of shorthand in those Tweets, for instance “u” for “you” and “r” for “are” because you have only 140 characters.

Hopefully this primer can get you started on the right foot so you don’t embarrass yourself on the Twitter dance floor.

If you are looking to create a social network and you are in a hurry, then you should visit a website like Ning. Ning is the first big site that comes to mind. If you are one of those who demand more control of their website, that is, having your own unique domain name, controlling the design and of course, the brandmark, then the advisable thing to do is to run one of the off the shelf networking scripts available.Todays expanding social networking internet has opened a market for software developers. New social networking scripts creap up on the radar everyday. The truth of the matter is that despite all the new scripts coming out on the market, only a handful have been around long enough to understand the business and the technology behind a good off the shelf script. Here we have handpicked four of the best open-source social networking platforms for you to choose from.DZOIC Handshakes serves up one of the foremost open source social platforms for this year, so there is very little uncertainty about the credibility of this software. For the most part, Dzoic Handshakes is a mighty piece of software that dishes up blog, instant messaging, community, video, music plus much more. In fact, it is one of the more complete pieces of software that provides almost everything you need to start a community site right out of the box.Dzoic Handshakes installs on a runs on a Php, MySql,Apache and Linux environment is simple to upload, install and configure. Having very little php skill, you can have your social networking software up and operating in very little time. Before you take the plung and run out and purchase dzoic, see what others are saying and vist their dzoic demo site HEREPhpFox is possibly Dzoic Handshakes biggest contender and designed with similar functionality. It is another platform ideal for just about any niche. With PhpFox, you can tap into a large community of skillful PhpFox users and leverage their talents. Features in the software include blogs, Videos, Advanced profile editing, video and image tagging, RSS feeds plus a whole lot more. The sky is the limit with this software and like Handshakes, it is 100% encryption free.PhpFox works on a runs on a Linux, Apache, MySql and Php environment like handshakes.See what other people are saying about PhpFox and then check out their website site.Social Engine, is 100% open source, modulure, social networking software that untilizes the Apache, Linux, Php and MySql environment. Social Engine is easy to customize and the Social Engine code writers have gone to extraordinary lengths to get Social Engine user friendly and easy to customise. Using thoroughly anotated and unencrypted source code, you should have no problem navigating your webpages. The Coders also went out of their way to supply fully annotated HTML templates for every single page of your social network. The primary downside to running a Social Engine script are the costs involved. Social Engine sells most of its features as plugins. The good side to that is that you do not have to pay for features you do not want on your site.{Get more reviews on the Social Engine Networking script here.|See what other people are saying Dolphin 6 – Smart Community Builder is variable social networking script that touts itself as being free. We all know all great things come with a catch. Boonex has licensing features that permit you to slowly get away from their control for a small cost. The fees are dependent upon the duration of the licensing. Boonex comes with plethora of features and modules. Bells and whistles include 100% AJAX Forums, Photo Sharing, Video Sharing, Music Sharing, Blogs, Polls, Search Events, Groups, Mailbox, Friends, Customizable Profiles, Powerful Admin Panel, Design Templates and Languages!

Itâ??s pretty obvious that the marketing of today has changed. You have newspapers going virtual/web only, Twitter and Facebook replacing postcards and phone calls, and potential clients now being the main target of your press releases as opposed to editors. Itâ??s all changing and to do PR today, you need to change with it. The good news is that itâ??s never been easier. The bad news, you need to learn a new way to do things. Fortunately, there are tips that can make it easier and Iâ??m here to show you a few.

First, no one can deny the power of social networking. And those that do are just plain wrong. Iâ??ve been in business since 1985 and I liken this to way back when emails became a way of life. Many still contended they wanted to do it the old fashioned way and nothing would beat a letter. (I know itâ??s hard to even imagine this today.) It wasnâ??t long until they realized their error, but by then their competition was way ahead of them. Donâ??t make the same mistake now. You absolutely need to get with it and get on board. I can practically guarantee you within weeks youâ??ll be hooked and wondering why you ever hesitated. Itâ??s so easy, and the potential so great, you need to start today.

Letâ??s break it down. Twitter first. Forget all the â??I donâ??t care what they ate for lunch excuses,â? thatâ??s where your competition and peers are and you do need to be there too. Sure you do have a few tweeters who will update you on the latest hot dog they ate, but thatâ??s rare. What you do have is more and more businesses networking and connecting with each other in ways never thought possible. Itâ??s also more than just networking back and forth, you can have chats, host events, get more publicity for your articles and press releases and even announce your seminars and radio shows. And thatâ??s not even the half of it. There are entire books written on this, so my first recommendation is to get them. Why struggle and find your way around when you can easily read the tips from those who know exactly what you need to succeed.

Also, while you are getting your feet wet, donâ??t jump in and start posting and selling and ranting and raving. Take it slow. Sign up, take a sit, remain quiet for a short time and read what others are posting. Follow the leaders in your industry and take advantage of their knowledge. It can almost feel like walking around with them all day and looking over their shoulders for their secrets. Whatâ??s cool is they give their tips freely, why wouldnâ??t you want to take advantage of that? As an example, if someone were looking for information on starting a virtual assistant business or getting publicity for their business, they could follow me at Twitter.com/dianaennen.

Now the key many forget is that not only do you need to follow them, you need to listen earnestly to what they are saying. Go to the sites they recommend. Actually do the things they suggest. And most importantly, if you have the opportunity to contribute and honestly have something of importance to say, do! Even if they arenâ??t following you, once you list their twitter name @name, it will go to them. Best yet, you might get a retreat or even better a RT and follow back. As many say, those are the ultimate compliments.

Now itâ??s important to learn the social media lingo â?? Hashtags, Retweets, Fans, Follow Friday, this is just a few of the many names you need to know to do business better. It can be overwhelming. No, in fact it is overwhelming. However, if you keep it simple and take it a step at a time, you can do it. When you see a term you donâ??t know, look it up right then. Write down your interpretation and do the investigating to find out more about it. Here are just a few to help you on your journey.

Whatâ??s a retweet? Thatâ??s when you find somoneâ??s information useful and you want to pass it onto your followers. So basically RT (retweet) is good content that you pass on. Many RT just to RT. Donâ??t be one of them. You know your followers and what they want and need, thatâ??s what you should be RTâ??ing. We highly recommend signing up for TweetDeck for ease in doing this. A click of a button and you are there.

Next you need to know about Follow Friday. This is definitely one of my favorites. Think of Follow Friday as your day networking at a business get-together, only better. You get to stay in the comfort of your own home, and you get to immediately make the connections, not when you get home with a handful of business cards. Try and plan your week so you can participate. Remember this can be even more effective than a Chamber meeting or an expensive business seminar. So plan a lighter load on Friday whenever possible. You want people to mention you so mention them. Also, donâ??t just list 20 screens of twitter names that you want people to follow. Tell your followers why they should follow them. What do they offer that your followers would be interested in? Remember to put #followfriday in your posting. (By the way, see that # in followfriday. Thatâ??s what is called a hashtag. Cool huh!) And finally, you want people to retweet your followfriday postings, so keep your count to 120 instead of 140 so they can easily do this. In fact, do this for all tips or postings you want retweeted.

Try and post on Friday mornings. I donâ??t know about the rest of you, but Iâ??ll often go down my postings to find those I want to list. I know I want to list them before hand so itâ??s not that Iâ??m just going down my friends column, but often times I donâ??t have their information readily available. By posting on Friday you are giving it to them.

Finally, sign up for Trilalerts for your keywords. Start following those of interest. For example, Iâ??m a virtual assistant, so Iâ??ve signed up for virtual assistant updates. Now I can follow other virtual assistants easily. I do the same for Publicity, etc. Who do you want to connect with? Thatâ??s who you sign up for. Follow the media. Sign up for Facebook and Twitter for the newspapers and TV stations in your area. Look for business reporters who tweak and follow them. Learn their style and what they are looking for in their articles.

Also, follow some of the owners of the many article and press release directories who tweet. Some of the best are on there and giving away secrets to success left and right.

Facebook is pretty self explanatory. The key here is to spend some time to expand your network. Fortunately you get notices when someone responds to your posts, so try and go and follow-up as soon as you can. However, be careful that you donâ??t get sidetracked doing this too often. Build relationships. You can have thousands of friends and fans, but can you honestly connect to all of them. I know I sure canâ??t. Twitter also now allows your tweets to be sent to your Facebook page too. This is definitely a plus. Just make sure that you donâ??t do this to all of your postings, only the ones you feel would interest your friends on Facebook.

Article Submissions, Press Release Submissions – I also say you need to send out articles and press releases religiously. Many question how some succeed with this and others donâ??t. Whatâ??s the difference? The main thing is that they know what to do. They realize the difference that page ranking can make and donâ??t waste their time on sites that donâ??t get results. They sign up for Google Alerts under their keywords and then check out the sites that frequently get spidered. Then they send to those places and add those sites to their database. We do have a fabulous PR informational package that is free to anyone who emails us.

Marketing a business and social networking doesnâ??t have to be expensive if you just remember to network and use all the tools available to you. In fact, it can be fun as you get to meet new people and develop new ways to sell you and your business. Also, keep in mind if you donâ??t want to do it yourself, there are excellent qualified pros and virtual assistants available to assist. You donâ??t need to do it all. You just need to do it!

I bet you want to figure out a way to make a little extra pocket jingle, right? But you probably don’t know how. There are a million ways to make money. What is “in style” and extremely popular online today, and can you use that to make a part time or even full time income?Twitter may be the goose you need to lay the golden egg. “What is twitter, anyway?” Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that lets users send and read messages that are called “tweets”. They are text based posts of up to 140 characters. Followers are those people that read the tweets of others. Senders are the ones sending out the little messages to their followers. You can send these “tweets” to either your close friends, or open it up to anyone in the world that can become your follower.Once you get a large group of followers, anytime you post a new message, it will be instantly sent to them in a variety of ways. That way, they can keep up to date with whatever you are doing at any given time (as long as you “tweeted” about it).”Ok, got it, but what does that have to do with making money?” Well, once you have a following, you can send information about different websites or products you may be a part of, and when they visit your site, or buy your product, you just made some cash-o-la!
