Tweets And Peeps — The Social Networking Vocabulary

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

A excellent friend of mine who is also a social networking expert contacted me the other day and told me I had to stop saying “twittering” and say “tweeting.”

Well, she’s right. I was using the incorrect term. But, I was really doing that on purpose.

Previous to I tell you why, let me give you some background information. Right now, Facebook has 150 million users, Linked In has 34 million and Twitter has 4.4 million. I don’t have the numbers for MySpace, the last I heard it was still the largest, but at least in terms of business use, a lot of people have went away from MySpace to Facebook.

Now, there are thousands of social networking sites out there, but (as expected) a pecking order is early to emerge. That doesn’t mean things won’t exchange in a few months, but for now, many business folks are focusing on the huge 3 — Facebook, Twitter and Linked In.

Of those 3, Twitter has the least amount of users right now, even if it’s growing very quickly. But, the difference between 150 million and 4.4 million, or even 34 million and 4.4 million is substantial. As you can see, of all the people at the social networking dance, a lot of them haven’t figured out the Twitter 2-step yet.

Now, that in itself isn’t a problem, but of all the social networking sites, Twitter has the most specialized vocabulary. So, this all adds up to me using the incorrect words because I want to make it simpler for people new to Twitter to grasp what I’m saying. (Besides, I really despise some of the Twitter vocabulary — tweets? Peeps? Have we descended to the amount of chickens and are now all hanging out in a giant hen house? But I digress.)

But, after considering it, I’ve chose my friend is right and I need to start using the right terminology. Therefore, I chose to provide a fleeting primer on what you’ll learn when you venture on Twitter.

First, what is Twitter? Officially, Twitter is called micro-blogging. I call it instant messaging on steroids. In a nutshell, you have 140 characters (including spaces) to say what you want to say. Twitter’s prompt on what you should be saying is “What are you doing right now?” While that is still a viable thing to talk about (after all, there’s a reason why reality box is so standard, we’re all extremely interested in other people’s lives) that’s not all you can do with Twitter. You can have conversations with people, provide tips and quotes, promote other people’s harvest/air force/events and promote your own harvest/air force/events.

Every time you type a comment, it’s called a Peep. When you’re communicating with people on Twitter it’s called Tweeting.

If you see an RT or ReTweet, it means a name is repeating a name else’s Peep. And, because people on Twitter want to give credit where credit is due, the person they’re ReTweeting has the @ sign with their Twitter name (so, for instance, if they’re ReTweeting me, you’ll see @MichelePW)

You also see that @MichelePW when people are having a conversation with each other. And, it’s not people but Peeps (even if this is a small confusing because when people are following your tweets they’re called Followers.)

If you want to have a confidential message with a name, then you can Direct Message them, or DM them. (Note, I’d still be a small careful with your DMs as there have been times when that feature stops being confidential and instead turns into being publicly broadcast.)

Lastly, you’ll also notice a fantastic deal of shorthand in those Tweets, for instance “u” for “you” and “r” for “are” because you have only 140 characters.

Hopefully this primer can get you started on the right foot so you don’t make self-conscious yourself on the Twitter dance floor.

Building a Network: How to Make Your Social Network Popular

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

One of the main concerns of a social network owner is how to make the site standard and successful through user activity. A social networking site will die if there are no members who will make use of the functionalities of the site and who will encourage visitors to join in on the activities.

So how does one turn a seemingly generic social networking site into a bustling community full of committed participants? Here are some ways on just how to achieve that:

1. Place forward a touch that other social networks don’t have

Or at the very least, make an existing function better. We see a lot of social networking sites that have practically the same content; the only difference lies in the number of users and usually, their interface. Try to compare the different successful sites that you can find and determine whether they’re lacking a touch that you, as a user, want to see in those kinds of sites. If you can’t find anything, try to see if there’s anything that you can improve to make the users’ browsing and activity better.

2. Judge your site the way a habitual user would

Forget the lines of codes, the expenditure, the time it takes to develop and all those other technical material. Place yourself in the shoes of a habitual, average user and criticize your layout, functions, interface and other add-ons to see if they would work well even for those who aren’t computer-savoir-faire. I’m guessing that this will be one of the toughest tasks that you have to do since you know your site like the back of your hand so if you get stuck on this one, question a friend or a family member to do the judging for you.

3. User bases help in spreading the word

Place forward privileges to the first ten or 50 users who sign up to your site and in return, you can question them to help you in promoting your site. This promotion can be in the form of inviting their acquaintances and family through email or by posting you networking site’s link on their personal sites or simply by word of mouth. This is really how the successful social networking sites started out – if it worked for them, it can work for you….

Social Networks in the News: Facebook Grows & Obama Gets Tweeted

Friday, January 29th, 2010

There are dozens of Social Networks available to people all over the world, and two of the most standard are making huge news … again. Facebook is in the focus for its impressive growth, and Twitter for a message that only had a fleeting lifespan.

Facebook has more registered users than some countries have people. Their newest statistics show that the website is catching up with the populace of the United States. According to the most recent Census, the U.S. currently has 305,529,237 residents. The “populace” of Facebook isn’t far behind – they now have just over 300 million users.

Last July Facebook reported 250 million users, so this is a very impressive jump in numbers over a fleeting period of time. The company is constantly looking for creative ways to attract even more people. They recently launched Facebook Lite, a toned down version of Facebook that they claim is a “quicker, simpler way to keep in touch with your acquaintances”. Facebook also has several projects in the works, including a voice chat application, to delight social networkers.

It’s working. Even if the site has been wildly standard, it has not been profitable. That changed during their last quarter; for the first time ever, Facebook made a profit. This is causing people to view the future of the company in a different light. Until recently there has been a fantastic deal of speculation that Facebook would be sold to a large competitor, but now people are thinking the social networking site is in it for the long run.

Twitter gets talked about a lot, but a few recent Tweets have really caught the attention of the nation. These Tweets came from employees of ABC News who overheard a comment made by Head Barack Obama while his guard was down.

Head Obama was talking with CNBC employees previous to an interview, and several ABC staff members who share the workspace were nearby. The subject of Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards came up, and Obama said that his events were inappropriate. When a name questioned why Kanye would do that, Obama answered “He’s a jacka**”.

Obama’s statement was met with laughter, and he questioned that it be kept within the room. His question for was denied, but, when more than one ABC employee Tweeted about what the Head said. ABC officials had the messages removed, but by then they had been seen by a large number of people and were by now being Re-Tweeted by those who approved and disapproved of the Head’s comment.

This incident reopens a recent discussion about what people who work at nationally recognized companies can and cannot post on their social profiles. Representatives of ABC felt it was incorrect for their employees to post a comment Obama made privately, and this could lead to a new set of rules that people must follow when using social networks. In the meantime Obama’s remarks will fall under intense analysis all across the globe.

Social Networking Changed Everything – The New Marketing & PR Model

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Itâ??s pretty obvious that the marketing of today has changed. You have newspapers going virtual/web only, Twitter and Facebook replacing postcards and phone calls, and potential clients now being the main target of your press releases as opposed to editors. Itâ??s all varying and to do PR today, you need to exchange with it. The excellent news is that itâ??s never been simpler. The terrible news, you need to learn a new way to do things. Fortunately, there are tips that can make it simpler and Iâ??m here to show you a few.

First, no one can deny the power of social networking. And those that do are just plain incorrect. Iâ??ve been in business since 1985 and I liken this to way back when emails became a way of life. Many still contended they wanted to do it the ancient fashioned way and nothing would beat a letter. (I know itâ??s hard to even imagine this today.) It wasnâ??t long until they realized their error, but by then their competition was way ahead of them. Donâ??t make the same mistake now. You unquestionably need to get with it and get on board. I can practically guarantee you within weeks youâ??ll be hooked and wondering why you ever hesitated. Itâ??s so simple, and the potential so fantastic, you need to start today.

Letâ??s break it down. Twitter first. Forget all the â??I donâ??t care what they ate for lunch excuses,â? thatâ??s where your competition and peers are and you do need to be there too. Sure you do have a few tweeters who will update you on the newest hot dog they ate, but thatâ??s rare. What you do have is more and more businesses networking and connecting with each other in ways never thought possible. Itâ??s also more than just networking back and forth, you can have chats, host events, get more publicity for your articles and press releases and even announce your seminars and radio shows. And thatâ??s not even the half of it. There are entire books written on this, so my first recommendation is to get them. Why struggle and find your way around when you can easily read the tips from those who know exactly what you need to succeed.

Also, while you are getting your feet wet, donâ??t jump in and start posting and selling and ranting and raving. Take it slow. Sign up, take a sit, remain silent for a fleeting time and read what others are posting. Follow the leaders in your industry and take advantage of their knowledge. It can nearly feel like walking around with them all day and looking over their shoulders for their secrets. Whatâ??s cool is they give their tips unreservedly, why wouldnâ??t you want to take advantage of that? As an example, if a name were looking for information on early a virtual assistant business or getting publicity for their business, they could follow me at Twitter.com/dianaennen.

Now the key many forget is that not only do you need to follow them, you need to listen earnestly to what they are saying. Go to the sites they recommend. Really do the things they suggest. And most importantly, if you have the opportunity to contribute and honestly have a touch of importance to say, do! Even if they arenâ??t following you, once you list their twitter name @name, it will go to them. Best yet, you might get a retreat or even better a RT and follow back. As many say, those are the ultimate compliments.

Now itâ??s vital to learn the social media lingo â?? Hashtags, Retweets, Fans, Follow Friday, this is just a few of the many names you need to know to do business better. It can be overwhelming. No, in fact it is overwhelming. But, if you keep it simple and take it a step at a time, you can do it. When you see a term you donâ??t know, look it up right then. Write down your interpretation and do the investigating to find out more about it. Here are just a few to help you on your journey.

Whatâ??s a retweet? Thatâ??s when you find somoneâ??s information useful and you want to pass it onto your followers. So in the end RT (retweet) is excellent content that you pass on. Many RT just to RT. Donâ??t be one of them. You know your followers and what they want and need, thatâ??s what you should be RTâ??ing. We highly recommend signing up for TweetDeck for ease in doing this. A click of a button and you are there.

Next you need to know about Follow Friday. This is certainly one of my favorites. Reckon of Follow Friday as your day networking at a business get-together, only better. You get to stay in the comfort of your own home, and you get to immediately make the relations, not when you get home with a handful of business cards. Try and plot your week so you can participate. Remember this can be even more effectual than a Chamber meeting or an expensive business seminar. So plot a lighter load on Friday when possible. You want people to mention you so mention them. Also, donâ??t just list 20 screens of twitter names that you want people to follow. Tell your followers why they should follow them. What do they place forward that your followers would be interested in? Remember to place #followfriday in your posting. (By the way, see that # in followfriday. Thatâ??s what is called a hashtag. Cool huh!) And irrevocably, you want people to retweet your followfriday postings, so keep your count to 120 instead of 140 so they can easily do this. In fact, do this for all tips or postings you want retweeted.

Try and post on Friday mornings. I donâ??t know about the rest of you, but Iâ??ll evenly go down my postings to find those I want to list. I know I want to list them previous to hand so itâ??s not that Iâ??m just going down my acquaintances column, but evenly times I donâ??t have their information readily available. By posting on Friday you are giving it to them.

Irrevocably, sign up for Trilalerts for your keywords. Start following those of interest. For example, Iâ??m a virtual assistant, so Iâ??ve signed up for virtual assistant updates. Now I can follow other virtual assistants easily. I do the same for Publicity, etc. Who do you want to connect with? Thatâ??s who you sign up for. Follow the media. Sign up for Facebook and Twitter for the newspapers and TV stations in your area. Look for business reporters who tweak and follow them. Learn their style and what they are looking for in their articles.

Also, follow some of the owners of the many article and press release directories who peep. Some of the best are on there and giving away secrets to success left and right.

Facebook is pretty self explanatory. The key here is to spend some time to expand your network. Fortunately you get notices when a name responds to your posts, so try and go and follow-up as soon as you can. But, be careful that you donâ??t get sidetracked doing this too evenly. Build relationships. You can have thousands of acquaintances and fans, but can you honestly connect to all of them. I know I sure canâ??t. Twitter also now allows your tweets to be sent to your Facebook page too. This is certainly a plus. Just make sure that you donâ??t do this to all of your postings, only the ones you feel would interest your acquaintances on Facebook.

Article Submissions, Press Release Submissions – I also say you need to send out articles and press releases religiously. Many question how some succeed with this and others donâ??t. Whatâ??s the difference? The main thing is that they know what to do. They realize the difference that page ranking can make and donâ??t waste their time on sites that donâ??t get results. They sign up for Google Alerts under their keywords and then check out the sites that frequently get spidered. Then they send to those places and add those sites to their database. We do have a fabulous PR informational package that is free to anyone who emails us.

Marketing a business and social networking doesnâ??t have to be expensive if you just remember to network and use all the tools available to you. In fact, it can be fun as you get to meet new people and develop new ways to sell you and your business. Also, keep in mind if you donâ??t want to do it yourself, there are brilliant qualified pros and virtual assistants available to help. You donâ??t need to do it all. You just need to do it!

What is Social Media Optimization | Affordable SEO Services | SEO Traffic Spider

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Social media optimization or SMO is yet a further method for search engine optimization of your site. As the name implies, you optimize your site by advertising it through the social media sites, online communities and community websites such as blog sites, message boards, podcasts, wikis and vlogs. The methods for social media optimization involve the use of RSS feeds, social bookmarking, video and photo sharing, social news buttons and blogging etc. The basic thought is to drive traffic to your site without spending cash on search engine advertising. The concept of social media optimization was introduced by Rohit Bhargawa of Ogilivy Public Relations. Originally, he enunciated five rules for social media optimization, but the list was expanded by other contributors.According to Rohit Bhargawa, “The concept behind SMO is simple: implement changes to optimize a site so that it is more easily linked to, more highly visible in social media searches on custom search engines (such as Technorati), and more frequently included in relevant posts on blogs, podcasts and vlogs.”In actual practice, social media optimization seeks to make links to the site by making it more visible through the social networking sites like Squidoo, Blogger, Hubpages, Face Book, Twitter, Digg, Tasty, My Space or search engines like Technorati. How does one go about social media optimization?Getting links for your websiteThe number of links your site manages to pull through decides its popularity with the search engines. It is like deciding the popularity of the chief through the votes he gets. In case of a website its popularity index is the number of links it gets from other websites. Tagging and bookmarkingTagging and bookmarking can be made simpler by inducting content features such as buttons like “add to tasty” and other bookmarking sites. In addition to this, you can also include relevant tags to your pages besides the home page for the standard social bookmarking sites.Make inbound linksInbound links are considered vital for the popularity of the site and its content in searching engine ranking. You should make links to the blogs or sites that contain back links to your site and increase its visibility.Make your content travelMake some changes in your site to enable your content to travel far and wide in your niche area. This can be done by including portable content such as PDFs, video and audio files and submitting them to your list members as well as sites related to your niche. This will help you to make back links for your site.Allow others to use your contentA glaring example of this practice is YouTube. You can download its videos to your sites to illustrate your content and make it more appealing. A further example is to use RSS feeds to syndicate your content so that others can use it for their benefit. This can help you to drive traffic to your website.Pros and cons of social media optimizationAs with other methods of driving traffic, social media optimization has become victim of spamming or link farming. While the noble thought behind social bookmarking is to include links to informative, useful and appealing sites, people bookmark – syndicate – their own sites in numerous bookmarking sites not heeding of the feature of their content which can be pirated, duplicate and low-cost. It simply eats into the web space of the bookmarking site and makes a kind of content nonsense making it hard to sift grains from the chaff.

How to Register and Set up Twitter The Fastest Growing Social Sites

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

What is Twitter?Twitter has to be the fastest growing Social Media sites online today.  It is taking the internet by storm and there are around 10,000 new users per day signing up to participate in this new online revolution.Twitter is best described as a micro blogging network.  Users are limited to 140 characters of text each time you do an update, which initially, may seem a small amount.  But, as you play around more, it’s just incredible what you can fit into 140 characters. But, Twitter is much, much more than that.  It is like one huge global forum, but then again, it doesn’t have to be.  It all depends on how many people you follow on Twitter.  If it’s in the thousands, then your “Tweetstream” will be running quick and furious with everything that’s coming in.  If you are only following a few hundred, or even less, then things are much simpler to keep up with.Twitter is also a fantastic way to meet new people online, particularly those with similar wellbeing to you.How To Set Up Twitter AccountSetting up Twitter Account tand o have your own account is simple, but there are a few things that you should be aware of when organizing your account.  This can apply even if you by now have an existing twitter account too, so consider these tips and it can improve your entire Twitter experience. The first thing to do if you don’t have a twitter account is go to twitter.com which is the main page of Twitter.  You will be questioned to either login or register. If you don’t have an account, then of course you will need to register for onw.  So let’s go through the registration process and clarify it all here. How to Register Twitter AccountThe Twitter screen will question you for your first name and last name and will then check this is entered correctly.  A green tick will appear next to the box.The next screen questions you for a user name and this is where you need to consider how you are going to present yourself on Twitter. You should remember that you can set up more than one account on Twitter, but you will need a different email address for each one.Now this is where the thinking bit comes in.  The first account you register should permanently be in your own name if you can get it.  Genuinely, common names like JackSmith (there are no spaces in usernames) will by now be taken.  But it is possible to get variations on your own name such as Jack_Smith, or Jack_Smith23 or some variation like that.  You can only use an underscore in a username. Hyphens are not permitted in the field. It isn’t unquestionably critical that you register your own name, but I would advise you do if you can, particularly if your name is a special one.  I’m sure the last thing you want is a name else impersonating you on Twitter, or somewhere else for that topic. If you wish to register a business name, then you can do that of course, but make sure you use your own name in the sign up process so you are exclusive and connected with the company name you register.  The concepts and reasons for operating under each type of registration will be discussed later. You are now questioned for your email address. Email addresses are linked to financial statement and you will only be able to use your email address once. For every account you register, you will need a different email address. The last thing to do is to fill in the Captcha letters and then click on Make My Account. The next screen will question if you want to add any of your acquaintances from the standard web based email programs.  You can do this later if you wish. The next screen presents a fleeting list of people who Twitter questions if you want to follow. Choose some if you like, but I wouldn’t bother. I prefer to find my own acquaintances on Twitter. When you click Close, you will then be taken to your very own Twitter account.  You are logged in and ready to go!To learn more about How to use Twitter to market your business and drive traffic and sales to your business, take a look at these Video Tutorials on Twitter

Social Marketing With Facebook And Google Blogger In The Real Estate Industry

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

First question to question is: How ancient are you?

I know that might sound rude or impersonal but it’s relevant. I’m 41 and I was schooled in an environment that embraced PC’s. Google and Websites were only blips on the radar in the US when I was 14. Since then men and women of my age have grown to become accustomed to life with the internet. Recently our children have embraced the online social culture in the form of MySpace, Facebook and Google Blogger.

So it’s honest to say that new home buyers, second home buyers and even investors aged up to mid 40’s are now using the net to make their next purchasing choice. It’s also honest to say that the internet and current technology has broken down the age barrier when it comes to trawling the internet.

A recent client of mine, Rhino Realty in Queensland has broken tradition and opted for a fully self-managed website solution that has the Gen Y sector intrigued. This website has a social networking aspect and also includes a LIVE WEB CAM INSPECTION TOOL enabling buyers to view the property in realtime via their website.
