How to Build a Blog With WordPress

Tired of toying with the puny tools that cookie-harvester blog air force provide? Follow the steps in this simple guide to install a WordPress blog on your own domain and personalize your Web presence.

blogging, blogger,blogspot,make cash from blog

If blogging is all about self-expression, why do so many blogs look so blah?

Limitations of free blog sites; click for enlarged image. Most beginner “blahgs,” it seems, are generated using free air force whose customization options are meager at best. But you can break the tedium and supercharge your Weblog by installing your own blogging software and customizing it as you like. You’ll control how your site looks and functions–and when you’re finished, you’ll have a distinctive-looking blog that you can easily update to keep it fresh and functional.

blogging, blogger,blogspot,make cash from blog

Dozens of fantastic blogging tools are available, and PC World has rated several of them. Among the most standard and versatile of these is WordPress. You can easily scale it to your needs, so it can handle a basic family blog or a qualified blog or news site with copy aplomb. The newest version, WordPress 2.5, offers photo gallery support, powerful media management options, multiple file uploading, a new look, and more. And because it supports a host of plug-ins and widgets, you can quickly introduce bonus features as needed.

blogging, blogger,blogspot,make cash from blog

I’ll clarify how to get started with the installation, how to customize your blog, and how to make posts. If you just want to dabble with a free, hosted WordPress site, stay WordPress.com; But if you want to take full control of WordPress’s powerful content management and site design features, including your own personal domain name, you’ll need the WordPress software (note that the free software is available at WordPress.org, not at WordPress.com) and a Web hosting account to install it on. Using the WordPress software, you’ll be able to exchange a multitude of settings to craft your own unique, simple-to-manage site.

What You’ll Need

To get started with your WordPress blog, you’ll need four or five basic things.

#

A Web hosting account with PHP version 4.3 and MySQL version 4.0 or later enabled.

#

A MySQL database to store your blog’s data in. You’ll make this during the WordPress installation process.

#

A text editor, such as Notepad (on Windows) or Text Edit (on the Mac). A simple text editor produces better results than a full-blown word processor such as Microsoft Word.

#

An FTP client, such as FileZilla for Windows or CyberDuck for Mac, to simplify and accelerate the process of uploading the WordPress installation files to your hosting service.

#

An image editor, though optional, can be very helpful if you want to make your own custom themes. One excellent, free option is The GIMP (that is, the GNU Image Manipulation Program), which includes many features that rival Adobe Photoshop provides, minus the price tag.

Install WordPress

Rename ‘wp-config-sample.php’; click for enlarged image. WordPress requires PHP version 4.3 or higher, and MySQL version 4.0 or higher. These tools allow WordPress to do scripts and manage databases that instantly propagate your Web page. Check with your Web host to confirm that it supports these pieces and that they are installed successfully; the vast majority of hosting companies place forward these features as part of their standard air force.

At the heart of every WordPress blog is a MySQL database that contains all of its posts and settings. It’s a excellent thought to set up this database on your host server previous to you start working with individual WordPress files. That way you can customize your configuration file previous to uploading it, which is a significant time saver.

To make the database, log into your hosting service’s control panel–cPanel, phpMyAdmin, Plesk, or whatever the interface may be. Somewhere in the main control panel, you should see a listing for MySQL databases. My host uses cPanel, so I clicked the MySQL Databases icon, typed in a name for my new database–’wordpress’–and clicked Make Database. I also typed in a new user–’blog’–and password, and then clicked Make User. You can choose whatever names you like for your database and user, but your process should be similar to mine.

If you haven’t by now, you should download the free WordPress software to your computer and extract the files onto your desktop. All of them should be contained in a folder labeled ‘wordpress’. Within the wordpress folder, locate the file named ‘wp-config-sample.php’ and rename it wp-config.php. Then open this file in a plain-text editor (such as Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on a Mac), and replace ‘putyourdbnamehere’, ‘usernamehere’, and ‘yourpasswordhere’ in the file with your database name, your user name, and your password, respectively. Leave the other formatting–such as spaces and single quotes–intact.

Now upload the WordPress files–excluding the outer wordpress folder itself–to the root directory of your host account. You’ll probably want to use one of the FTP programs mentioned earlier under “What You’ll Need” to go everything swiftly, instead of pursuing the click-gray method of doing everything within a browser-based control panel.

You can even use the Web to uncover government secrets and to predict your own demise. (Those last two activities will be unrelated, we hope.) Best of all, most of these sites won’t charge you a dime.

Go Back in Time

Take a trip down memory lane with the Wayback Apparatus. Here’s the PCWorld.com site circa 1998.

Wonder what Yahoo looked like during the dot-com boom? Dial up the Wayback Apparatus, and you can view cached copies of standard Web sites dating back to 1996. For quick nostalgia trips, add a Wayback bookmarklet to your Firefox or Opera toolbar or Internet Explorer favorites; clicking the button will call up the archive of the site you’re viewing.

Give Google a Face-Lift

GoogleX provides simple access to Google’s many search projects.

Google offers more than a dozen air force, but most are hidden. The GoogleX interface makes all of Google’s goodies–such as Gmail, Froogle, Maps, and more–accessible via a clean Mac OS X-like toolbar. Originally designed by a Google researcher, the toolbar disappeared shortly after being posted on the Google Labs site (most likely due to objections by Apple), but not previous to some plucky Netizens saved a copy for your use.

Catch the Early Buzz on Trends

Want to find out what the bloggers are talking about previous to it hits the mainstream? Just sign up for PubSub and plug in your search terms. This site crawls more than 9 million blogs, public relations newswires, and SEC filings for relevant entries, and then e-mails you the results. You can also install a sidebar applet inside IE or Firefox and view the results interactively.

Back Up and Share Music and Videos

Using Streamload, you can upload gigabytes of music and video files (as well as Word docs, Web pages, presentations, and more) and share them with any other Streamload user you choose (provided you have the legal right to use the material, of course). You or your acquaintances can stream or download media files to any computer, so you can watch your home videos even when you are far from home. A free Streamload account comes with 10GB of storage and 100MB of downloads per month; financial statement with unlimited storage and from 1GB to 60GB of downloads range from $5 to $40 per month.

Check Your Inbox From Somewhere

You say your ISP doesn’t place forward a Web interface for your e-mail inbox? Don’t fret. With Mail2Web you can access any POP3 or IMAP4 account, read and respond to messages, and attach up to 10MB of files from any Web-connected computer. And don’t worry, your mail will still be there ready to download when you get back to the office.

Find Uncle Sam’s Hidden Files

Hear that huge sucking sound? It’s thousands of documents disappearing from government Web pages–some removed due to inhabitant security concerns, and others for political reasons. But at sites like the Federation of American Scientists’ Project on Government Secrecy, The Memory Hole, and Cryptome, you can find some of these missing files, along with other declassified but hard-to-find documents.

Make Your Own Reality TV Show

Why should Paris Hilton and Donald Trump get all the glory? On ManiaTV you can submit your own 5-minute video clip; if it’s picked, the site will devote an hour of programming to a video of your life. You can also send in clips from your mobile phone, or program an hour-long “mixtape” of your favorite video clips for broadcast online. This self-styled MTV (without the TV) claims 1 million unique visitors a month.

Travel by Kayak

That’s “Kayak” as in Kayak.com–a cool metasearch site that works like an in-house travel outfit. A Google-like home page searches for flights, hotels, and cars from more than 100 different travel sites. Unique slider bars let you filter flights by time or price range; you can view all available airlines, airports, and hotel chains, or winnow down to just your favorites.

Tell the Truth in Secret

Maybe your boss has terrible breath, or a close friend is in serious need of an ego trim. You can slip them a word in secret using Sharpmail’s anonymous e-mailer. You can send your message in plain text or HTML, or you can send an SMS message to a name’s cell phone. (But don’t even reckon about sending abusive or spammish mail, or Sharpmail will pull your free account.) Who knows? Maybe you’ll receive an anonymous message taking you to task for your passive-aggressive e-mail tendencies.

Tour PC World’s New Community

blogging, blogger,blogspot,make cash from blog

Wed, 22 Aug 2007 16:00:00 UTC

PC World is proud to unveil its groundbreaking new community platform, based on Jive Software’s ClearspaceX platform. You can check it out right now!

The new community platform retains our standard message-board discussions while count robust features such as blogs and wiki documents. PC World community members have more frankness than ever to express themselves, discuss news and issues, troubleshoot and solve problems, and write their own tech encyclopedia. For more information, see our “What is Clearspace?” wiki document.

Differences From the Previous PC World Community

blogging, blogger,blogspot,make cash from blog

The community has undergone a few major changes in its layout, as well. First, the PC World site navigation on the left side of the page is gone, replaced by community-specific navigation. Bonus community-specific navigation is available across the top of the page, under the PC World header and the horizontal ad. The vertical ad on the right side of the page is also gone, allowing the community the full width of the page. In addition to the forums, which are now called discussions, we’ve added access to two more content types: documents and blog posts.

Top Navigation

blogging, blogger,blogspot,make cash from blog

Click to view full-size image. At the top of every page is a horizontal navigation area designed to help you get around quickly and efficiently. From this list, you can make new content, see Your Material (including your profile, your preferences, your open questions, and content you have produced), examine your History (bits and pieces you have recently viewed), or browse (blogs, documents, discussions, tags, people, or communities).

‘What’s New’: The Community Home Page

The “What’s New” page has pointers to three new content types: the current top members for the entire community, a full list of communities, and a list of everything that has been posted to the community in reverse chronological order, with the newest bits and pieces on top.

Each linked item in the list has an icon next to it, so you can quickly identify it by its content type. You will also see how long ago it was posted and where it was posted. The user name of the post’s author, linked to that person’s profile, appears along with that person’s avatar. You can filter this list by content type, or you can make a custom view that shows content from forums that are of particular interest to you.

The Three Content Types

Click to view full-size image. The community’s three content types are exclusive by icons and a new color scheme: a silver speech bubble (and a gray-blue background) for discussions, a green group (and a light green background) for blogs, and a yellow page icon (and a pale yellow background) for documents. For more information, see our “What is the difference between a document, a blog post, and a discussion?” wiki document.

Top Members

Top Members Underneath the list of communities is the new top-members list. Members are ranked according to their point totals, and members with the highest rank are shown here with their avatar and rank icon. Top members in the entire community appear on the home page, while top members in individual topic communities are highlighted on those pages.

Communities

CommunitiesWhat we used to call a “forum” is a “community” in Clearspace. These individual topic areas are listed along the left side, and are frequently the same as they were in the previous PC World forum. Each community contains its own discussion forum, blog, and array of wiki documents. Content can be linked across communities by tags.

Standard Tags

Standard TagsBelow the list of communities is a tag cloud, a collection of the most standard tags from around the entire PC World community (and in specific topic communities, on those pages). The larger the font, the more standard the tag is. You can click on any tag to see a list of all content tagged with that word or phrase. See our “About tags and tag groups” wiki document for more information.

Diving In: Inside a Community

Click to view full-size image. When you penetrate a community, you will see a tabbed interface that provides an overview of all content in the community, plus “What’s New”; you may also go straight to the discussions, blog, or documents for that community.

To make content, select the appropriate link from the Events menu on the right side: Make a discussion, Make a document, or Make a blog post.

For more detailed information on specific content types, search for bits and pieces tagged with that content type. For all documents relating to the platform, search for the tag “clearspace”.

The Points System

Instead of basing user status levels on the number of posts, we have switched to a points-based system that awards points for participation as well as donations. You receive points for early discussion threads, making blog entries, and making wiki documents. You also get points when other members of the community find your message-board posts helpful or accurate in answering questions. View a list of the points per action and user ranks in our “Community Points System” wiki document.

Posting Questions

Click to view full-size image. If you are asking a question in the discussion area, you now have the ability to mark your thread as a question. This clearly identifies it for members who are looking to help.

Click to view full-size image.A message at the top of the forum thread will indicate whether the question is answered or unanswered, and how many helpful or right answers are available. Each thread can have a maximum of one right answer and two helpful answers. The member who questioned the question is responsible for designating helpful and right answers for the awarding of points.

For more information, see “How do I question a question in the community?” and ” If a name answers my question, how do I say so?”

Converting Discussions to Documents

Converting Discussions to DocumentsOur community generates so many fantastic tips, tricks, and solutions, but finding these nuggets of wisdom can evenly be challenging. Lots of fantastic information gets buried under other forum threads. Now, but, when a message thread contains really useful information for other members, you can easily turn the discussion thread into a wiki document.

When you click the Exchange thread to document button on any discussion thread, the system involuntarily loads the thread content into a wiki template. From there you can edit the thread into a concise wiki document and submit it for approval. When you exchange a thread to a wiki document, a link within it involuntarily connects back to the thread; that way, should a reader of the wiki document want to see the original discussion, they can do so with one click.

Reporting Abuse

Click to view full-size image.Even if we have a fantastic and dedicated Member Arbitrator team, we can’t be everywhere all at once. Do you see a touch in our community that you reckon is a violation of our Community Standards? Now you can report such posts to the moderators for review by clicking the Report Abuse button, located at the bottom of every message-board post. Fill out a simple form indicating why you reckon the post should be removed, and a arbitrator will review and process your question for. For more information, see our “How to report a Community Stand

Wordpress Customization / Wordpress Templates – Websites For Better Search Engine Optimization

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

If you are on WordPress, then you know that is one of the best personal publishing platforms around, and that it adheres to high standards of usability and aesthetics. It’s free, and there are benefits like its user-friendly features, its easy-to-build themes and easy customization, its simple setup, and the fact that it uses standard and free web server technologies. With WordPress, it’s always easy to make changes to your site, and even the themes and plugins are usually free! Now WordPress customization is very important – you do want your blog looking good, right? For instance, there are the General options, under the Options box. Another form of WordPress customization is your Permalinks, we recommend you change it to Custom from Default, this increases your Google rank site, and gives you better search engine optimization. Your themes can be chosen under “Presentation > Theme”, and this is perhaps the best part of WordPress customization.

There are hundreds and hundreds of themes out there, and you can even download more. So during Wordpress customization, how do you install a new theme? Firstly, download its zip file, unzip into your /wp-content/themes/directory, and then you shall be able to see it in the Presentation menu. That’s in the end all there is to it, so if you play around with the themes, you can give each page a different look. Each WordPress template is a separate PHP file inside the theme’s directory, and some of the standard WordPress templates are 404 template = 404.php, Archive Template = archive.php, Comments Template = comments.php, Footer Template = footer.php, Archive Index page = archives.php, among others. When it comes to WordPress themes, you can either stick to the Default theme, or tweak it a bit to make a new one – to make your blog look more personalized. It is really reasonably simple to make your new theme, you start by copying your existing theme to a new directory in your themes directory, then edit the style.css file. After that, you have to edit the theme information, go to the WordPress administrator and modify your current theme to the new one you have produced. After that, it’s all about customizing and feeling proud of your new things!

WordPress customization & templates are simply all over the place. You can try the column themes, adult themes, fashion themes, computer themes, business themes, car themes, games themes, movies theme, pets and nature themes, dating themes, design themes, shape and medicine themes, music themes, personal themes, among others. If it’s a touch to do with a wedding, then there is the Wedding Rose free WordPress template, which is unquestionably lovely. The widgets are ready, and it’s based in red and grey colors. There is also Royale Blue, Lily Interior, Diary Key, and even a Windows Media Player theme! Yes, you must have realized by now that there are many WordPress templates out there, you just have to run a search, pick the one you like best, and then upload it accordingly.

New Tools Help Take Your Blog to the Next Amount

With WordPress blogging software and a compatible host, you can customize your blog pages and gain greater control.

blogging, blogger,blogspot,make cash from blog

Send your questions and tips to nettips@spanbauer.com. We pay $50 for in print bits and pieces. Scott Spanbauer is a contributing editor for PC World.

Scott Spanbauer

If you’re a new blogger, Google’s free Blogger service will meet your needs. But if you’re a born-to-blog expert like me, you want bonus features, personalization, and control.

Blog-o-Matic

blogging, blogger,blogspot,make cash from blog

Top-flight bloggers are increasingly moving to WordPress, Automattic Productions’ no-cost, open-source blogging software. Unlike the basic blogging tools found in Blogger, Microsoft’s Windows Live Spaces, and Yahoo 360, WordPress offers tons of plug-ins and widgets for customizing your blog. One of my favorite WordPress features is its spam filter, which weeds out spam posted as comments. You can also make your blog confidential, allowing only the people you specify to read and comment on your postings.

blogging, blogger,blogspot,make cash from blog

But WordPress gives you more than a simple chronological Weblog: The program’s pages feature makes it a full-blown content-management system supporting complex Web sites. For example, WordPress templates let you keep your bio, contact info, or other static content simple for your blog visitors to access.

WordPress’s PHP script files require the MySQL database and PHP software running on the host server. After editing one of the scripts to include your MySQL and PHP user names and passwords, you upload the scripts to the server–and just like that, you have a blog.

If this seems like programming voodoo to you, relax. WordPress and most of its hosting partners provide point-and-click tools that have you blogging in minutes.

If you’re pleased using a subdomain (such as scottspanbauer.wordpress.com) rather than your own domain (www.scottspanbauer.com, for example) and don’t mind an occasional text ad among your postings, you can make a free account on Automattic’s WordPress.com, a blog-hosting service much like Google’s BlogSpot. At the time of writing, free WordPress.com blogs were limited to 25MB of images, PDFs, and other files. The amount of text that you and your readers can post is unlimited, but. (Automattic plans to add commercial account options that increase storage.)

If you choose WordPress.com as your host, setup is a breeze. When you log in, a toolbar of configuration options appears at the top for making posts and pages, varying themes, moderating comments, and count links to a page’s sidebar (see FIGURE 1

FIGURE 1: Customize your WordPress blog by using the point-and-click options that are available on the service’s toolbar.

). You can receive e-mail support from WordPress’s creators, too.

For collaboration, make bonus author and arbitrator financial statement and set the blog to be invisible until it’s ready.

Try the Hosts With the Most

To use WordPress to publish a blog or site on your current Web host, your hosting service must support PHP and MySQL. Independent air force such as Blue Host and Laughing Squid place forward WordPress support and charge as small as $7 a month; go to wordpress.org/hosting to see a list of such air force. A personal note: I be crazy about my local mom-and-pop ISP for its high levels of customer service, technical savoir-faire, and stability, but when I broached the subject of supporting WordPress blogging, the company wasn’t prepared. If I were to make a WordPress blog using my own domain name, I would probably select one of WordPress’s recommended host air force.

Blogging for Dollars: Cash In With Google’s Adsense

If your blogging consists of posting pictures of the kids for Fantastic-Aunt Millie to see, or detailed financial statement of your bunion surgery, don’t expect to strike it rich as a pro blogger. But if what you say is appealing to even a modest audience, you could receive a check each month by placing ads on your blog. One of the simplest ways to test the Web-ad waters is with Google’s AdSense service, which context-matches Google text ads to your blog’s content and optionally places a Google search box on your site.
