Parents Must Act If Their Child Is Being Bullied

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Most Americans do not take bullying seriously.  Sadly, school personnel don’t take it seriously either.  One of the most common myths about bullying is that it is “habitual” and “everybody does it.”  Nothing could be further from the truth.

Children with special needs may become the victim of a bully.  If your child has been, or is, being victimized, he or she feels alone, unsafe and may even feel the persecution is justified.  The things of bullying impression mental and physical shape and literary performance, evenly for many years after the actual incidents occur.

Who is a bully and what is bullying

Only about 15 to 20 percent of children are ever involved in bullying, either as a victim or as the bullying child.  Bullies are children who have not urban the typical internal restraint system that other children have.  Male bullies tend to favor physical aggression, while female bullies tend to strike at a victims’ social standing and friendships.

Bullies start their pattern of aggressive behavior at an early age, and take up again the pattern of intimidation for many years.  A well-known Norwegian psychologist who pioneered the study of bullying and how to stop it, Dr. Dan Olweus, identified three basic elements of bullying—bullying involves: 1) a pattern of aggressive behavior, 2) from a child in a spot of power directed towards a child in a weaker spot, 3) with the intention to do harm.

Why does a child become the victim of a bully

Up until about age seven bullies pick on anyone.  Between the ages of eight and 16, bullies target specific kids.  Those who become targets are more sensitive, alert, and silent than other kids, and more nervous. They also have a negative view of violence, withdrawing from confrontations of any kind and crying when threatened or attacked.  When confronted, they are gripped with dread.

The effect of bullying on a child can be loneliness, poor shape, depression, anxiety and poor learning

Being bullied leads to feeling nervous which then increases the child’s vulnerability to further persecution because bullies single out nervous kids.  The difficulty victims have in sticking up for themselves seems to make other kids uncomfortable, and gradually, victims of bullying are rejected by their peers and become increasingly isolated and lonely.  Research shows that social isolation and rejection produce severe stress.

Children being bullied dread going to school and have stress-induced illnesses such as stomachaches, and headaches.  Even after the bullying ends, children who have been bullied are prone to depression and negative self-concept.

It is becoming more clear that children who are victimized have had limited practice in handling conflict.  Children need to be given opportunity to solve their own problems.  Over-defending parenting can erode a child’s critical problem-solving skills.  But, overly strict discipline techniques have the same effect because they limit a child’s chances to learn how to interact and deal with disagreements and conflict.

How to Handle a Bully

Reasons Why Webhosts are Spreading Their Customers Across Servers

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

As Hosting is a 24×7 business it is mainly a tough business. Everything like servers, bandwidth etc requires to be up and running 24×7. Redundancy in everything is the only solution in such a condition. One requires duplicating everything like having multiple power sources main power, UPS, generator, having multiple bandwidth providers etc. apart from this entire 100% uptime guarantee cannot be given. It is appealing to know that this kind of redundancy is wanted by web hosts from their providers. Nonetheless, hosting all their customers on a single server is the mistake made by many small hosts.

Having one high end server and filling them with as many financial statement as possible is time and again considered better. Few reasons why a single server is preferred by webhosts -

1. Maintaining a single server is much simpler.

2. Cost of buying multiple servers is more when compared to buying a single server.

3. Multiple O.S. Licenses and multiple control panel installations mean multiple servers. The cost of software is reduced.

4. More datacenter space is multiple servers while collocating.

5. A higher end server is considered better where customers look at the specs of a server.

6. Well-configured server when compared to poorly configured server can take more sites.

7. As the OS architecture is better a excellent OS such as NetBSD would take more sites.

When a single server can do the task no one would want to take multiple servers. Just selecting the right OS and configuring it by an expert is the only thing a webhost needs to do so that he/she can live a peaceful life hosting as many sites as he/she wants, perhaps even unlimited sites on a server. All this might sound too excellent to be right.

Most of the time even with over a 1000 sites thing looks very excellent. And thus it’s been chose by spammer to pay for a year and start spamming from the server. The sites start to take ages to load and the load is never not more than 20. All the sites will go down at one shot if the server crashes. Supposing server goes down in the morning hours of first day of the working week and the server has say about 1555 sites, then the webhost may end up with many cancellations and 755+ support tickets. Thus single servers may possibly mean:-

- As the number of support calls increases it means higher support expenditure.

- As the server is catering to more sites there can be higher server load. This would result in slower sites.

- As the number of users per server is higher there are more risks. More users per server is hard to maintain.

Total throughput of the Ethernet card is a further vital aspect that many hosts forget when hosting on a single server. At any instant of time a single card would permanently have its limitations on amount of data it can push. If many of these sites are accessed at the same time, the Ethernet card would fail to push the data quickly when multiple sites are being hosted.

Lastly, lower-end servers consume less power than high-end servers. They are also heated up more than fixed servers. This over heating leads to quicker hardware failure.

On a typical server “How many sites can a webhost host?” No exact number is there for this. Just how many sites per server are ultimate has to be single-minded by every host. Factors required to be considered to reach this figure: –

- The ratio of static to dynamic html sites on the server.

- Type of O.S. and software used.

- Different packages being offered by webhosts. Higher bandwidth, more mailing lists, databases etc. would mean higher server loads.

- Maintenance of servers. Servers that are not maintained on a fixed basis have lesser sites hosted.

- Place where customers are located, as a lot of sites from the same time zone would have higher usage at the same time.

The load ought to generally be lesser than 1 for a single processor server. One can see the CPU load by using the w or top command on Linux. Or merely cat /proc/loadavg . 0.5 means that only half of the CPU time is utilized whereas the load average of 1 means the entire CPU cycle is being utilized by processes. Experiments determine the right load average.

A lot of importance should be given by webhosts to the amount of RAM as well as the type of network card used by the server. While taking server one should permanently go for high-end Ethernet cards. The maximum throughput of data would be ensured.

Web hosts cannot replicate the setting on servers because of the demand for different O.S. and control panels. Maintaining the servers will not be a problem if a excellent policy is in place. Webhost are allowed to broaden their offerings to the end users in terms of the O.S. and control panels offered by multiple servers.

Only when a server crashes or when a server is hacked the largest benefit of having multiple servers is being understood. The number of distress tickets is reduced in such cases, as every site that is hosted by the webhost is not affected. Instead of having an mad crowd of 1555+ customers at one shot it is better to have 250 customer sites down at a time in case of hardware failure. Multiple servers also mean that the webhost can spread the name servers across the servers.

Search Engine Spiders and Their Purpose

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Search engine spiders are by far one of the most useful things to come around in the last 10 years of the internet. They are useful not only to the web sites (Google and many others) that use them, but also to people who are searching for a particular site and those who run web sites. Spiders allow your site to be seen by the millions of people who use search engines every day. In this newsletter, we will discuss what search engine spiders do, how they work, and how to set up a robots.txt file and upload that to your site to keep spiders from visiting your site.

What are spiders and what purpose do they serve?

Spiders are essentially programs that “crawl” sites and report back to their superior (Google or whatever search engine they were produced for) what their findings are. Their purpose is to make it simple for sites to get listed in search engines.

You might be wondering, what does it mean to “crawl” a site?

Well it means to stay and site and copy the information.

How do spiders work?

Spiders work by finding links to web sites, visiting those web sites, going through the content of a web site and then reporting the content of the site back to the database of the site which they are working for. Google spiders, thus, crawl sites and report the information back to Google’s database. From there, the information is added to Google’s search engine, and the site then shows up in Google search results. Much the same process happens with any other search engine spider.

How can I keep spiders from visiting my site?

You might be thinking, “Why would I want to keep such a useful thing from visiting my site?” Well, the fleeting answer is, sometimes site owners don’t want the spider to crawl on a particular part of their site. Some site owners don’t want spiders to crawl their site at all. The reasons for not wanting a spider to crawl a site or a particular part of a site vary, even if most of the time it is because the site is either completely spam or features a page or two of spam.

If you’re one of those site owners, then you’ll want to make and upload a touch called a robots.txt file. We will briefly go over how to do this.

A robots.txt file

The total purpose of a robots.txt file is to tell a search engine spider not to crawl the site or part of the site on which the robots.txt file resides.

Making the file

Making a robots.txt file that blocks out spiders is simple.

First, open up notepad. Then, copy and paste the following:

User-agent: *

Disallow: /

Once you’ve done that, save the file as “robots” and as a .txt file.

Uploading the file

Next, you will upload the file to the part of your site which you do not want the spider to stay. So, if you don’t want them to stay yoursite.com/news/, you’ll upload robots.txt to the news folder. If you don’t want the search engine spider to stay your site as well, upload robots.txt to your index folder. That’s all there is to it.

Using the robots.txt file to make sure search engine spiders DO stay your site

Believe it or not, the robots.txt file can be used to both disallow and allow search engine spiders to crawl your site. Here’s how to make and upload such a file.

Making the file

Open up notepad and copy and paste in the following:

User-agent: *

Disallow:

You’ll notice that the only difference between this and the earlier example is that Disallow: is not followed with /. If it were, that would tell spiders to go away. Once again, save the file as robots.txt.

Uploading the file

All you’ll do is upload the robots.txt file to the part of your site that you want the robot to pay a stay to. So if you want the robot to see the total site, just place the robots.txt file right alongside the index file. And you’re done.

Making and uploading a robots.txt file to help make sure spiders don’t miss your site is quick and simple. So what are you waiting for? Make and upload that file now!SEO Softwareinternet marketing softwareemail marketing

Internet Forums and Their Use

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

Forums; commonly referred to as message boards, discussion groups and bulletin boards. They are a web application for holding discussions and posting user generated content. If you need help or advice you can nearly guarantee there will be a forum about the specific topic area where you will be able to contribute to the discussion and find out exactly what you need.

Forums are produced and used for a number of different reasons. For example most bands and music artists that have a website will more than likely have a forum where fans will be able to discuss the recording artist and interact with other people who share the same wellbeing.

Forums can also be used by businesses as a way of showcasing their expertise in the hope of enticing new customers to their business. In this case the forum is used as a way of marketing; it sells the business and its service to members of the public and people can use forums such as this to find a business service that they need.

Forums are free to use and anyone can use them. There are a few forums still around that require no registration meaning that anyone can just go and post a message on it. But due to problems with spammers taking advantage of the fact these forums don’t require registration, many of the forums that are built today are built so that in order to post you have to register. Registering on a forum merely takes a topic of minutes and by registering with a forum you have the option of choosing your own username and image, known as an avatar. You also get the option of writing your own signature, which appears frankly under you post. Within this signature you can post links to sites and include pretty much any information that you want.

Forums are modified by people known as administrators. These administrators are usually people that have a touch to do with the building of the site or is a name who is employed by the site owner to do this particular job. Administrators modify the posts that are made, they can go, delete, and edit topics. They also have the power to shut the forum down as well as being able to delete, ban and make members. This is effectual but also hard work, administrating a forum takes a lot of time, evenly more than the administrator is given.

Forums, like many places across the Internet, can sadly suffer from spam. Even if the introduction of making registration compulsory across many forums has reduced and stopped some of the spam from getting through, spammer’s have produced what are known as spambots. These are programmed to be able to fill in a registration form on a forum and are programmed by the spammer to leave messages promoting the spammers service/product. Spambot’s signatures on forums are permanently more than likely to the top with links taking you to explicit or malicious content.

Forums can also suffer from individuals known as trolls. These individuals breach the rules of forums by posting derogatory messages about sensitive topics and evenly post links to ‘shock sites’ as well as placing images across the forums that other members may find disturbing.

The positive aspects of forum use but greatly outweigh the few negative aspects that we can see through spambots and trolls. Forums are a fantastic resource on the Internet and will take up again to be in the future.
