Website Design – Installation & Introduction to Wordpress Video Tutorial
Saturday, December 5th, 2009Tutorial: Create a Custom Wordpress Page With Different Template
Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009Recently I needed to make a page in Wordpress that didn’t have the sidebar on it. I still wanted the sidebar on all the other pages, just not that one (i.e. for an option or sales page).
It took me a while to find the solution, but the one I found works like a charm. Takes a bit of programming knowledge, but not too terrible.
Here is a quick video on how to go about doing it and a custom.php to get you started. Credit goes to Moses at wpthemesplugins.com for the solution. My video just walks you through each step to make it a bit simpler.
Click Here to watch the video tutorial at Evil Genius TV.
Sorry, I would embed the video tutorial here, but it is not allowed
In a nutshell, here are the steps:
1. Make a custom.php file in your favorite text editor. I use Notepad ++
2. Add this code to the beginning of your custom.php file
/*Template Name: custom*/?>
3. Copy the contents of your page.php file from your current theme.
4. Paste the code not more than what you just added to the custom.php
5. Find the code that says < ? php get_sidebar(); ? > and delete it.
6. save custom.php
7. FTP custom.php to your current theme folder under wp-content>themes>(whatever theme you are using)
8. Create a new page. Under Advanced options, choose Page Template > custom.
9. Thats it!
If it sounds complicated, it really isn’t. In the video, I will walk you through it in about 5 minutes.

WordPress Tutorial – Make Static Page Your Home Page -Part 3
Monday, October 26th, 2009
This WordPress Tutorial follows-up to the tutorials “Make a Static Page Your Home/Front Page” and “Make a Static Page Your Home Page – Part 2″. Tutorial Part 2 shows how to hide the link to a page that you use as your home page so that people aren’t confused by the fact that there are two links to the same page in your main site navigation. That practice works when you have navigation in the sidebar that shows subpages AND you really have subpages that are part of your site. If you don’t …
Wordpress 2.3 Easy Upgrade Tutorial
Sunday, October 25th, 2009The recent release of WordPress 2.3 with new features and database changes begs the question, how should a webmaster plot and then implement the upgrade. Any upgrade that involves database changes should be undertaken carefully, and preparation is key to a successful upgrade.
Typically, most webmasters install custom themes and bonus plugins, and of course they upload extra files such as images to their /wp-content/uploads folder. All of these files need to be backed up and stored off server prior to undertaking the upgrade process. The database itself also needs to be backed up.
Backing up your site is best achieved by installing the BackUpWordpress plugin and selecting the default backup options which will make a compressed file of your complete site including files and database. If anything does go incorrect it should be relatively simple to restore this and import your database into MySQL using phpMyAdmin or your host’s preferred database manager.
Once you are certain your site has been backed up, you’re ready to start preparing for the upgrade. Are your plugins and chosen theme compatible with WordPress 2.3? Most modern themes shouldn’t produce any problem apart from that non v2.3 themes may not include the tags code needed to make use of the new tags feature of WordPress 2.3. This is a relatively simple update to make, and simply involves count extra php code to the theme’s index.php and single.php.
Open index.php and single.php in your favorite text editor and search for the following code , and simply add the following code previous to or after depends on where you want the tags will be showed (previous to or after your article).
The plugins used in yor site will need to be checked against the list of compatible plugins. Any plugin that isn’t compatible will likely not work correctly or at all. You may need to contact the plugin author for an update or discontinue using that plugin until an update is available.
You should now be ready to upgrade your installation to WordPress 2.3, and if your host provides wget functionality simply copy the zip file to your server then unzip them frankly into your WordPress folder. If wget isn’t available to you, then you’ll need to download the zip file and use an ftp client to upload the unzipped files.
Once you’ve uploaded your WordPress files, make sure your WordPress 2.3 compatible theme is uploaded to /wp-content/themes. Did you need updated plugins? Upload these to /wp-content/plugins. You should now be ready to initiate the WordPress update script.
Navigate to the admin section of your site, WordPress will involuntarily recognize that an upgrade is required. Once completed, and if all has gone to plot, you should be able to login to Dashboard without any difficulty. Excellent luck.

Wordpress Video Tutorial: Why You Need a Wordpress Tutorial
Friday, October 16th, 2009A Wordpress tutorial can teach how to use Wordpress in blogging, but by far the best way to learn is by means of a Wordpress video tutorial. Why video and why Wordpress? Let’s take the last question first.
Why Wordpress
Most people use either Blogger or Wordpress for their blog, and there appears to be an ongoing debate as to which is best. I prefer to design my own blogs using Drupal, but that’s not related to this topic. With repect to the Blogger and Wordpress debate, there is only one answer for serious bloggers.
Wordpress. That is in now way being derogatory towards Blogger – just fact: run from Google’s hosting site kown as Blogspot, Blogger is an simple blogging system to use, and being simple, it has very litle opportunity for customization; but Googe users can use Google’s toobar to add posts or online content to their blog at the clickof a button. But, Wordpress wins hands down when we consider serious boggers seeking more detailed customization.
Sure, you can ftp Blogger to your website and run it from there, but if you do the same with Wordpress you have an infinitely larger number of possibilities that Blogger cannot even start to compete against.
Wordpress Video Tutorials
If you want to operate Wordpress form your website you have to do it right, and it takes some knowledge of how your web space works and also of your online databases. But, learning is well worth it, and there are Wordpress video tutorials online that can help you to do so easily. There is a lot involved, but all you have to do is copy what you see on the video and you will get the same result as the video does.
Not only that, but in order to make best use of it, you have to learn the benefits of using plugins, widgets and themes and how to use them to your advantage. These are what make your blog what it is: add Adsense bocks, a calendar or a blogroll – or all three. If you know how to do it, you can alter the entire appearance and functionlaity of your blog.
Wordpress Templates and Themes
Wordpress templates are what give your blog its online appearance. Your theme can be chosen according to style or color. For example you can a space-oriented style, woodland, nature, medical, etc. The themes and templates contain graphics that can represent any topic that your blog is based upon. An environmental theme, for example, could be based upon melting icebergs, or pets on a theme showing any animal you want to choose. There are thousands of Wordpress templates available online, both free and paid.
Wordpress Plugins and Widgets
Plugins are small applications or code that carry out certain events. As an example, there are plugins that optimize your posts for Google, amd you also get one that sends a peep to Twitter when you make a new post. It will shrink the peep to a TinyURL link. You can download a plugin to your blog that will allow you to add a calendar in any format you desire.
A widget is a small icon that activates these plugins when clicked upon. If you use a excellent Worpress tutorial, all that will be clarified, but if your are doubly fortunate to have a Wordpress video tutorial, then you will be able to see what is being done and follow it exactly with your own blog and make it work as it should.
There is now doubt in my view that Blogger is inferior to Wordpress as a blogging system, as long as you run Wordpress from your own website, and you will also need a Wordpress tutorial, preferably a Wordpress video tutorial, to ensure that it is installed correctly and that you know how your blog can be modified and customized to what you want it to look like.
Excellent Luck!
