Understanding RSS And Its Effect On Viral Marketing
Tuesday, January 26th, 2010RSS and Viral Marketing:
Viral marketing is one of the most creative ways of promoting a business. It can work wonders for any business even if there are certain principles that play a lead role in making viral marketing for business websites so effectual. Different businesses use different techniques while applying viral marketing to enhance their visibility and here are some of the best and time-proven techniques that can help your business too.
One way is to make content and share it with other publishers. RSS makes the transfer of content a lot more simple and hassle free. With this ease in sharing content make sure you have a signature in your content so that your link spreads online virally as well to boost your link popularity.
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and it is one of the most valuable technologies available for webmasters, administrators and users. In spite of RSS being such a valuable technology only 12% of users know what RSS is while only 4% have used RSS. So let us try and know what RSS really is and how it can help you or your business.
RSS is a type of feed that internet users can subscribe to. The RSS feeds updated on a fixed basis and frequently distributed in XML format. This helps in making custom tags. There are reasonably a few websites, which will have the RSS logo in orange and if you click on the icon, you will get connected to the website’s feed.
As far as the content contained in a RSS feed is concerned, it depends largely on the feed that you might be viewing. Most of the RSS feeds consist of a title and a brief part from the article. RSS is becoming overtly standard with bloggers because in this the headline format comes in involuntarily.
There are many reasons why bloggers and even fixed users are choosing RSS. One of the primary reasons being that using RSS can save time especially on an everyday basis. Let us take an example to know how it saves time. If you are a technical expert and you stay at least 6 websites on a daily basis to collect information then you probably open each website on a separate browser to look for news bits and pieces. So in a way, you are visiting them one by one as you can’t see all of them together.
On the other hand, if you have RSS, then all you need to do is stay a RSS feed reader or a RSS aggregator and this will help you to instantly identify the websites that have added new articles and these websites will be separated from the ones that don’t. A further salient point is that you can see all the past entries using RSS.
If you are visiting only one website but on a fixed basis then there are times when you will miss a new article added on the website on one of those days when you didn’t stay the website. This is where the RSS fits perfectly. Let us for once imagine that there are 20 websites for which you want to keep tabs then RSS will verify to be truly indispensable.
In order to use the RSS, you will first have to find a feed, the one that you can use. If you are using Mozilla’s Firefox then you will be able to find out with ease if a particular website has accessible feed or not. You don’t even have to go through the entire webpage looking for an RSS icon. When you open a website on the Firefox, you will see an orange icon on the right side of the navigation/URL bar. If you see the icon then it means that the website has RSS feed.
Click on the orange RSS icon in your Firefox browser and it will question you where you want to save the feed. Firefox treats RSS feeds as live bookmarks. Once you have saved the feed, go to the particular folder. The folder will have an expand arrow and you can click on the arrow so that it can show all the new entries that has been added on the website in an ascending order with the newest entry on the top.
There are times when your browser may not find a particular website’s feed as not all of them have RSS feeds. This is where you will have to search through the web pages to find any bits and pieces related to feed. There are some websites that have FeedBurner feed, which normally displays the current feed subscribers for that website. If you find a FeedBurner feed icon then click on it and copy the place of the link.
This is the basic information regarding RSS feeds for all those who want to use it to their benefit personally or for viral marketing purposes.

Twitter Marketing: 6 Steps to Creating a Viral Marketing Campaign with Twitter Hashtags
Wednesday, January 13th, 2010Copyright (c) 2009 OnlineBizU.com
Twitter, as a standard social networking platform, is a viral marketing strategy all on its own, especially if your followers like your tweets and retweet them to their followers. But, I’ve recently noticed a further trend in Twitter usage that increases its viral marketing capabilities through the use of hashtags.
What’s a hashtag, anyhow? Also called the beat sign, the hashtag (#) is added to a peep as a way of making trackable categories, groups, or topics that others can use to search for info using the Twitter Search feature. One of the most common uses of the hashtag is to peep what’s happening at an event or conference. The event organizer will question for all attendees use a specific hashtag, i.e. #yourevent, when tweeting about the event to your followers. So, then, a name who isn’t present at the event but wants to follow what’s happening there can simply search for #yourevent and see what’s going on and what participants are saying and sharing about the event.
Anyone can make a hashtag by putting hashtag (#) in front of anything. If you log into Twitter and look in the right-hand column, you’ll see the Trending Topics, many of which can be tracked with a hashtag. How can you use this strategy to make more viral marketing for your business on Twitter? By making a hashtag Twitter tips campaign.
Here are 6 steps to help you make your own Twitter hashtag campaign:
1. Research. What kinds of tips would be valued by your target market? On what topics do you frequently receive questions from your clients? My target market is permanently asking questions about getting more traffic, so I chose to focus on traffic generation strategies.
2. Choose your name. Choose a fleeting, simple name that reflects your brand and what you’re offering. Previous to making your final choice, you need to check your proposed name on Twitter Search (search by including the #) to ensure that no one else is using that name. Otherwise, your tweeted tips will blend together with the other hashtag group using that name. I quickly checked and exposed that no one was using #OBUTrafficTip, so that’s what I chose.
3. Make your tips. You can easily pick your tips out of an article or blog post you’ve produced. In my case, I had bought a PLR ebook that I used as a basis for my tips. Remember that your tips need to be less than 140 characters, including the hashtag name you’ve chosen and any links you include.
4. Link to relevant info. You get the most mileage out of these tips if you link the tips to a touch relevant to that tip. For example, if you have a bank of articles, each tip might link to an article you’ve written that has more details about the tip. For maximum exposure, you’ll want to link to info on your site or your blog rather than to the posting of an article in an article directory.
5. Upload the tips into TweetLater.com. This type of campaign is easily managed using TweetLater.com. Simply upload your completed tips and set them to distribute once a day or (several times a week) over the upcoming weeks by postdating them into the future. In this way you place these tips on autopilot and they post themselves.
6. Let them start to work their magic. It may take awhile for them to catch on, but ultimately others will start to retweet your tips as useful information they want their followers to access. As with most marketing strategies, consistence is the key here to your success.
It’s pretty simple to start your own viral marketing tips campaign using the Twitter hashtag. Simply follow the steps as outlined above, and watch as your number of Twitter follows grows each day!
